The Best 15 Moments of Comic Con 2016

SDCC 2016

This year's San Diego Comic Con had something for everybody. From the usual comic book movie reveals (cast, characters, and more) to the amazing trailers for superhero flicks and other blockbusters, it was a total success. And it would have been even better if Fox also came to the convention, with titles like X-Men, Deadpool, or even Gambit.

So who won this year's Comic Con seems to be a question that has already found an answer. While Marvel's presence was strong and the show it put on exceeded all expectations (of course I am talking about the awesome Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. II panel), Warner Bros. just had more to offer. And besides the superhero movie trailers, the studio revealed clips for other anticipated movies, such as Kong: Skull Island and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.

This being said, here are the biggest reveals from this year's Comic Con!

15. King Arthur: Legend of the Sword

King Arthur (Screen Rant)

King Arthur (Screen Rant)

This is a Guy Ritchie movie. And you understand that from the first moments the trailer begins. Known for the Sherlock Holmes movies (most recently) and praised for Snatch and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, this is a director to follow, even if he has become a bit too commercial in recent years.

So do you want to see a retake on the legend of King Arthur and his Excalibur? Well, you can do that on the 24th of March 2017. Expect a narrative that won't follow the traditional rules, and one that will mess with time and space. After all, that's how Guy Ritchie made a name for himself.

However, many are skeptical as far as the success of the movie are concerned. In this way, many believe that maybe Guy Ritchie should have continued with the Sherlock Holmes franchise - especially since there are many visual elements in King Arthur: The Legend of the Sword taken straight out of the RDJ franchise.

I am not one of those many. While I don't believe that this movie will spawn a franchise lasting for 6 flicks (as the director wants), I do see it making a good buck at the box office. And a trilogy will certainly follow. What do you think?

14. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (Just Jared)

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (Just Jared)

Many of us have grown up with the Harry Potter movies. But that doesn't mean that these movies were made just for the kids. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is the next instalment in the Harry Potter universe and it promises to be a spectacle for the entire family.

Of course, like many, I believed that this was just another way of milking the cash cow. Especially since this is a prequel to the beloved franchise. But after seeing the teaser and now the Comic Con trailer, I actually believe that this is the beginning of another impressive series of movies. And the cast if great - as always with the Harry Potter films.

Seeing that Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will be released this November, it will certainly have a great impact at the box office. Other than Doctor Strange, there are no real contenders at the number one spot.

Just check out the trailer and tell me that the beautiful music doesn't remind you of some very happy moments. Fantastic Beasts, even if it is the beginning of a franchise, already has a strong fan base. It will be a hit for certain!

I can't wait to see this one! Check out the trailer below!

13. Kong: Skull Island

Kong: Skull Island (WB)

Kong: Skull Island (WB)

With an epic cast (including John Goodman, Samuel L. Jackson, Brie Larson (the recently announced Captain Marvel), and Tom Hiddleston) and an epic plan (a confrontation with Godzilla), Kong: Skull Island revealed its first trailer. And to say that it was intense is an understatement.

And if you’re wondering how a giant ape can battle the King of Monsters, this trailer reveals that Kong does stand a chance. Of course, he’s still much smaller than Godzilla - but much bigger than the previous iteration of the ape.

But Kong is now at the beginning! And it seems to me that it takes a lot of cues from 2014's Godzilla, as far as the atmosphere and the tone are concerned. I just hope that the King will have more screen time than Godzilla did. And I do hope that his fights will be shown in full, instead of being relegated to the background, with the focus switched on the human characters.

And that even if Kong: Skull Island has a more impressive cast than Godzilla did. By the way - will Goodman go the same way as Brian Cranston did?

I know - this is not a comic book movie. However, given the fact that I did see a trailer, it is on this list. Check out the clip below - Kong arrives on the 10th of March 2017.

  1. Spider-Man: Homecoming

Vulture Concept Art (IGN)

Vulture Concept Art (IGN)

Spider-Man is back! And, together with Tom Holland, a host of brilliant actors are also coming! But, among them, I really want to see how Michael Keaton is in the role of the Vulture, a spidey villain we haven't seen before on the big screens. Yes - he was teased at the end of Amazing Spider-Man 2. But that lead to nothing at all.

Speaking of this villain, the concept art featuring Vulture vs. the web-crawler was released online. And I don't know about you - but it didn't really do anything for me. This Vulture doesn't look as original as the TASM2 did. In fact, it looks like a souped-up version of the Falcon suit - but not as cool as it.

But hey - this is just concept art. So it will definitely change. At least I hope so. I guess a first trailer will show the villain in all his splendor.

Speaking of which, there's no word just yet as far as the number of villains is concerned. The rumors say that it will be at least 3 - and each time this has happened in the Spider-Man flicks, the movies sucked. I guess we should trust Marvel. After all, the movie needs to be a hit in order to spawn a universe of its own.

  1. Black Panther

Black Panther vs. Erik Killmonger (Screen Rant)

Black Panther vs. Erik Killmonger (Screen Rant)

Yes! Triple yes! Black Panther has arrived - sort of. Michael B. Jordan was officially presented as the villain Erik Killmonger, while Lupita Nyong'o is Nakia, a Dora Milaje and personal bodyguard of Black Panther. Given the introduction T'Challa had in Civil War, I cannot not be excited about this flick!

Furthermore, given the position T'Challa has among his people, this is yet another chance for Marvel to mix the genres and refresh once again the comic book movie genre. Black Panther, first and foremost, is not a superhero, but a politician and a leader. So I do expect some very interesting topics to be approached in the flick.

Furthermore, there are hints that Black Panther will have to forge an alliance in order to keep his position as a leader. Killmonger will also ally himself with another villain, which is (hopefully) Andy Serkis' Ulysses Klaue. And this makes the movie even more interesting.

And, as we all saw, the Marvel flicks always work better when 2 or more superheroes are present. Will it be Black Widow the one who joins T'Challa? Will the Winter Soldier be awaken? Is Ant-Man going to have an adventure in the jungle?

I guess we'll have to wait and see.

  1. Suicide Squad

Warner Bros releases a bunch of clips and a B-roll footage clip from Suicide Squad!

Suicide Squad

It's so annoying that a certain actor took over the entire Suicide Squad panel"¦

But, leaving this aside, the Suicide Squad trailer was, once again, top notch. Someone should give a prize to those who synced the images with the sounds. As David Ayer said, the end result transcends both image and sound and becomes something else.

And, in the case of Suicide Squad, that something else is the most anticipated movie of 2016 (of course, post-Civil War timeline"¦).

This movie needs to be a hit, though - especially since the DCEU is pretty shabby after the poor performances of Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The first reviews (coming from casual viewers) called it a solid superhero action flick - without actually praising it and without bashing it. I guess we'll find out more when the embargo is lifted.

And that will happen on the 2nd of August. While I don't really care about what the critics say, the general audiences do. This is how, after all, Batman v Superman failed at the box office. I hope this will indeed be the flick to convince the audiences (and the fans) that Warner Bros knows what it's doing.

Check out the remix trailer below!

  1. Justice League

OMG - Superman tries to smile in the DCEU... (Screen Rant)

OMG – Superman tries to smile in the DCEU… (Screen Rant)

Oh, boy! If it weren't for that damned Batman v Superman, Justice League's teaser trailer would have been the best thing about the Comic Con! It's the Justice League!!! So why the hell is it not up there with Wonder Woman and the Netflix universe?!?

It's pretty clear that Warner Bros. listened to what the general audiences have said - that, maybe, the DCEU shouldn't be so bleak and frowny. And the Justice League clip presents, well, not something most of us wanted (the problem with BvS was the plot and the hacking/editing, not the tone!!!).

Thus, the colors (or lack of colors, for that matter) are still the same. But now there is comedy - or, at least, something that wants to pass as comedy. Why? I have no idea. While the Flash and Batman meeting was awesome, there was something peculiar about that exchange - the way the lines were written. Ezra Miller seemed to be way over the top.

Anyway, while it does generate some buzz, the Justice League trailer didn't do too much for me. Of course, it is one of the most anticipated movies of 2017. But a clip with unfinished CGI and dodgy exchanges cannot wash away the aftertaste of Batman v Superman.

Oh - Superman smiles in the poster. I can't believe that this simple detail needs to be mentioned. The world we live in"¦

  1. Lego Batman Movie

Lego Batman Movie (Hollywood Reporter)

Lego Batman Movie (Hollywood Reporter)

Who said that the Lego Batman doesn't count?

Among all the superheroes present in the Lego Movie, Will Arnett's Batman made the best impression. So if there was to be a sequel, he was the one deserving it. And it is happening, waiting to be released on the 10th of February 2017.

Of course, the date would suggest that the studio doesn't really trust this project - after all, February is where all the movies go and die. But Deadpool changed that. And since Lego Batman Movie doesn't really have a strong competition (I wouldn't call Fifty Shades Darker one, while John Wick 2 is certainly not a movie for the entire family), Will Arnett's Batman will make a ton of cash!

Will Arnett isn't the only big name to lend his voice in the movie. The others are Zach Galifianakis (Joker - this will be very interesting to see), Michael Cera (Robin), Rosario Dawson (Batgirl), Ralph Fiennes (Alfred Pennyworth) and Mariah Carey (Mayor Marion Grange). So this is a pretty serious main cast.

This movie cannot fail! And, hopefully, it will spawn a franchise of its own!

Just like the Lego Movie - which was released in the same timeframe. Check out the trailer below!

  1. Thor: Ragnarok
Hulk's gladiator armor revealed for Thor: Ragnarok

Hulk’s gladiator armor revealed for Thor: Ragnarok (Screen Crush)

Surtur, Hela, Loki, Skurge, Fenrir Wolf, Grandmaster - Thor and Hulk will have plenty of battles ahead, once Thor: Ragnarok arrives.

Thor: Ragnarok also featured a small clip - what the hell was Thor doing during the Civil War? But the reason why the Thor: Ragnarok panel isn't lower on this list is the reveal of the Hulk Gladiator attire. It seems like a dream coming to life - at least for me and even if partially.

Maybe after this particular segment of Thor: Ragnarok becomes a fan-favorite, Marvel will realize that there is a huge potential in adapting the World War Hulk storyline. This is wishful thinking. But, at this moment, the Planet Hulk adaptation from within Thor: Ragnarok seems the most appealing part of the entire film.

Taika Waititi directs the movie - which is great! Marvel has always known how to select its directors. And with this new director, it appears that the cast has the most fun on the set - as opposed to the previous 2 movies. It is always nice to see and hear that, because this means (usually) that the movie will also be so.

Thor has the weakest franchise in the MCU. It is about time he had a genuinely fun movie. Thor: Ragnarok has all the ingredients it needs.

  1. Legion

Legion (Variety)

Legion (Variety)

Legion is the new TV show about mutants - particularly about the son of Charles Xavier. And as one would expect from the son of the most powerful telepath, Legion/David Charles Haller is quite powerful.

The only problem is that he has a multiple personality disorder, with each of his personalities controlling one of his superpowers.

However, even if it is a show about mutants, Legion won't be set in the same universe as the X-Men franchise. And it won't feature any of the well-known mutants we have seen on the big screens. Maybe that is for the better. Maybe in this way we'll get to see some other mutants, who haven't been featured in the spotlight before.

And this new show is so high on this list for another reason as well - while it is not a full collaboration between Marvel and Fox, it is the beginning of it all!

And this will be a great show especially because of that! The trailer released makes the best of the protagonist's particular mental disorder. There is something very David Fincher-y about this trailer and probably that is why it works so well.

Just add this to your shows to see - you won't be disappointed. Check out the trailer below!

  1. Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. II

Taserface and his ravagers (James Gunn Instagram)

Taserface and his ravagers (James Gunn Instagram)

There were so many reveals for this movie, that just a small blurb wouldn't do it justice. We finally found out who Star Lord's father is, who the villain is (Taserface), and who calls the Guardians to ask their help (Ayesha). We also found out that Sylvester Stallone will be in the movie (will there be Tango and Cash references? After all, Guardians II stars also Kurt Russell), and so on and so forth.

And while the clip wasn't released for the entire world to see, we at least saw that the Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. II panel was indeed the best thing to happen at this year's San Diego Comic Con, with Ravagers taking the stage in full makeup and attire, with Yondu having a blast, and with bits of information about the main characters coming from the entire main cast.

I can’t wait to find out more about it! If I also saw the clip, the Guardians Vol. II presentation would have been higher on this list!

And when the moment comes, when the first trailer is released, I can bet that my expectations will go even higher. And I don't believe that James Gunn will disappoint when the movie will hit the big screens.

Vol. II will be released on May 5, 2017!

  1. Preacher

God is coming and bikini wax - seems legit (Preacher)

God is coming and bikini wax – seems legit (Preacher)

Preacher has divided its audiences. Some say that it is good, while others say that it is good, but it doesn't have much of anything to do with the comic books. Well, everything will change, as the midseason trailer has revealed.

Finally, Jesse, Tulip, and Cassidy are going to search for God and bring him to Texas, one way or another. Finally, the Saint of Killers will be revealed.

I guess I'm one of those who enjoys the show, even if it has strayed away from its comic book origin until now. The dialogue is top notch, the idea of the show is original (to say the least), and the characters are rounded and beautiful.

Who doesn't want to see this extra-ordinary idea coming to life? Who doesn't want to see a couple of rednecks (and Jesse and his cronies are exactly that) whooping God's ass and bringing him in front of the people?

The fact that the angels presented in the flick are coming from the same background as the main heroes makes it even better. Is this Heaven? Is this Hell? Do these two actually exist separate from the world we all live in?

You can see the trailer below!

  1. Doctor Strange

Doctor Strange

Doctor Strange (Marvel)

In a way, Doctor Strange seems to repeat the same formula of many other superhero movies. It’s an origin story, in which a despicable man finds a new meaning to life and battles foes he otherwise wouldn't be able to defeat. However, Doctor Strange also tries to reinvent the MCU, by introducing the concept of the multiverse.

And this should be its ace in the hole. This, and the introduction of real magic, of course. If until now the MCU expanded linearly, from Earth into the farthest corners of the Universe, now it will have multiple other dimensions and universes revealed. And the visuals are outstanding.

Of course, there will always be the Inception comparison. But is that a bad thing? No, it isn't. Doctor Strange takes this idea of being capable of shaping a reality and plays with it, giving it another type of grounding and taking it to the extreme.

If we also take into account that Dormammu (a classic Doctor Strange villain) could appear and could become the next big threat after Thanos, then this is a must see! You can check out the latest trailer below!

Even if it will seem pretty generic at first, you will still be blown away by the visuals and the ideas emerging!

  1. The Netflix MCU

Defenders (Netflix)

Defenders (Netflix)

While there were other big screen movies present at the Comic Con, my second favorite reveal concerns the Netflix Marvel shows. Thus, Daredevil was officially renewed for a third season. Netflix loves hallway fights in this show – I wonder how it will top what we saw in the second season…

We also saw the first Iron Fist teaser trailer. And it was just a teaser trailer – it didn’t reveal anything. But it did have quite a few questions to ask. And the biggest of it all: who was that greeting Danny?

If The Hand will indeed be the organization going against the Defenders, maybe it should be Stone the one talking to Danny Rand. In this way, the history of the Chaste will be revealed.

Plus, Stone is all about Chi manipulation – and Iron Fist is the most well known fighting using this skill. Check it out!

And then there was the Defenders promo - you cannot not get excited about this. Whether the Defenders will be a 13-episode show or not, it will still feel like an Avengers flick for the small screen. The promo doesn't reveal too much - but at least we'll know who the main baddie will be!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wBZtM8q2Z1g

Lastly, there was the Luke Cage trailer. And, boy, what a trailer that was! It was action packed and revealed that Netflix and Marvel do love some corridor fights. Plus, this will mark a first - a superhero flick/series based on an African American character, a series that will delve deep into this culture. Luke Cage - beginning on the 30th of September!

  1. Wonder Woman

First official poster for Wonder Woman movie!

First official poster for Wonder Woman movie! (Photo Credit – Facebook)

Of course, there are still people who believe that Gal Gadot is far from being the perfect Wonder Woman. However, despite that, the debut trailer showcased Gal as being the superheroine of our time (yes, even if the action of the film takes place about 100 years ago).

And the trailer, which can be seen below, also revealed a different side of the DCEU - one that isn't as bleak and toneless as the movies released until now (Man of Steel, Batman v Superman). Maybe that is why this is the best trailer of this year's Comic Con - because it mesmerizes with its lively colors and proves that the story of the DCEU is just beginning.

It’s a new hope, so to speak. And each and every time Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman speaks and smiles, this hope keeps growing stronger.

This being said, the trailer didn't reveal who the big baddie is. Furthermore, it didn't show Wonder Woman battling someone as strong as she is. But there is still time - Wonder Woman arrives on June 2, 2017.
