When Wolverine 3 arrives in 2017, it will be the last time when Hugh Jackman enters the skin of the most famous cinematic universe mutant. We don't know too much about this movie, except for the fact that James Mangold is returning in the director chair and that, maybe, Patrick Stewart will make an appearance as Professor X.
What we also know is that the events of Wolverine 3 will follow closely the events of X-Men: Apocalypse.
Keeping these in mind, what storylines could Fox bring on the silver screen in 2017?
Old Man Logan
Before jumping and saying that this Wolverine tale cannot be brought on the screens without the participation of all the major Marvel characters (especially the Hulk), we can say that it wouldn't be the first time when a studio decides to not keep close to the comic book origins.
In this way, keeping in mind that the final film with Logan will happen after the events of X-Men: Apocalypse, isn't it possible for En Sabah Nur to actually defeat the X-Men and then take over the world?
With Logan incapable of stopping him in the first place and incapable of protecting his friends, we can actually see him retreating and going into seclusion - the Landlords could be easily the Horseman of Apocalypse and the event that trigger's Wolverine's comeback could actually be anything at this point.
Is it possible? Sure it is, especially since Hugh Jackman hasn't been yet confirmed for next year's mutant extravaganza. Furthermore, the actor is quickly heading towards 50, which is actually pretty old - is it Old Man Logan enough?
Furthermore, if Wolverine does appear in X-Men: Apocalypse and he does become a Horseman himself (like the rumors said), he can actually be the one to kill the X-Men. Just like in the comics.
Update: So guess what Hugh Jackman said at the San Diego Comic Con, in regard to the next Wolverine installment: “I’ve got three words for you guys: Old Man Logan.” (via Comic Book Movie)
Enemy of the state
This is yet another Wolverine storyline which could follow closely the events of X-Men: Apocalypse by not staying true entirely to the comics. If Enemy of the state does happen, then we will see a brainwashed Logan fighting against friends and allies - you do the math and say how he'll end up brainwashed, after a movie featuring Apocalypse.
Sure enough, in this event, not all the X-Men would be killed - Professor X would be the one to replace Nick Fury from the comics and try to snap Logan back into his senses.
This would be one of the most fitting ends to Hugh Jackman's 17 years careers as the Wolverine - this would be an action-packed movie that would be a proper send-off to the character.
Until the role is recast - of course.
Wolverine: Alone
Granted, in the comics this storyline is a part of the Dark Phoenix Saga (and we all know how terribly this bigger storylines was adapted for the big screens). In this storyline (which is, basically, a single chapter in the saga), the mutant must find a way to free his fellow X-Men, who were imprisoned by the Hellfire Club.
Sure enough, an adaptation following the events of X-Men: Apocalypse could certainly dismiss the Hellfire Club in the favor of some other villains - who can be present even if Apocalypse is defeated.
It can be noted in here that Wolverine: Alone was the story which made Logan one of the most beloved mutants of all times. So yes - this would probably be the best way to end the character.
Death of Wolverine
Common, you must have thought about this one. If the character will indeed be retired indefinitely, then we might just call him dead. And it is all in the title. Furthermore, adapting this storyline would also mean (in a way) returning to the origins of Wolverine, since it would involve once again the Weapon X program and the mutant searching for the mastermind behind Weapon X.
Sure enough, this is also a storyline (pretty much like all) that would involve other Marvel heroes outside of the X-Men. But ways can always be found in order to adapt it.
Sure, we cannot see a connection with Apocalypse - but hey, maybe you can help!
Also – Deadpool – the cool one, could make an appearance!!!
Kitty Pryde and Wolverine
Adapting this storyline won't work just like a follow-up to X-Men: Apocalypse, but also for 2013's The Wolverine, since the action will take place again in Japan against the Yakuza. Again a character could end up brainwashed for the majority of the film (Kitty Pryde). This will also see the return of Yukio (played in The Wolverine by Rila Fukushima).
