Supervillains – The Strongest in the Marvel Comic Book Universe

Marvel supervillains

As far as supervillains are concerned, Marvel has some of the most well-known characters in the comics. From baddies such as Iron Man's Mandarin to Thor's Loki (who is one of the most popular at the moment, thanks to the MCU movies), or from big and well known cosmic threats such as Thanos to the more obscure one such as Molecule Man, Marvel has them all.

In this list, we are trying to find out who are the biggest threats out there, who are those top 10 supervillains who have made the entire Marvel comic book universe tremble. We are not talking about popularity, but about those supervillains who have such tremendous powers that they simply cannot lose in any kind of a fight.

So who are these guys? Who are these supervillains who make the Marvel superheroes give their best?

To be noted, just like any other comic book character, all of these guys have been defeated at one point or another, even by the least powerful heroes (or villains, for that matter). So we will take their most powerful avatars, those versions who wouldn't lose if it wasn't for some writers messing up with their storylines.

Vulcan

Vulcan the Emperor
Vulcan the Emperor

An Omega level mutant, Vulcan is the lost brother of Cyclops and Havok (two of the most well-known X-Men). He has a pretty tragic origin story, being torn out from his dead mother's body by the Majestor of the Shi’ar Empire. Sent back to Earth, he escapes the Shi'ar and becomes an X-Men, where he is takes on various missions.

In one of them, against the living island Krakoa, he is believed to be dead - along with a few fellow X-Men. But he wasn't. After fighting the X-Men who left him for dead and after easily defeating them, he heads into space, after remembering how he was torn out of his mother's body. His intention is to defeat the entire Shi'ar.

And he does that, becoming the leader of the empire - the first outsider to do that.

He has a pretty large array of powers. But his greatest strength is that he is able to absorb any and all amounts of energies. At one time, he even forced Adam Warlock to flee, after completely depowering him.

He is also resistant to telepathic attacks and he also possesses telekinetic abilities. At one time, he was even able to manipulate time itself (after revealing that he wasn't dead).

Vulcan is so powerful, having complete control over fire, earth, electricity, wind, water, darkness, and light, that he is on par with superheroes such as Silver Surfer and supervillains such as Onslaught, having the potential of surpassing any of these.

Dormammu

Dormammu
Dormammu

A classic Doctor Strange villain, Dormammu is the ruler/dictator of the Dark Dimension. Before clashing with Strange, he has managed to conquer multiple dimensions and universes, merging them with his own. An absolute dictator, he had no interest in the fact that these assimilations broke apart the conquered territories.

But, despite being called pure evil and despite being one of the ultimate Marvel supervillains, he also has some other traits, such as staying true to his own principles and demonstrating nobility in some situations. Thus, despite desiring to conquer Earth, he leaves the planet alone - just because he made a deal with Strange to defend his own domain against attacks. He respected his promise and never attacked Earth on purpose. As far as his nobility is concerned, he went as far as scolding Baron Mordo when the latter intervened in a duel with Doctor Strange.

Dormammu has a vast array of powers, ranging from necromancy to time travel. But his greatest one is his mystical power. He is, after all, considered one of the strongest magic users in the Marvel comic book universe - according to himself (which doesn't say too much, since he is pretty narcissistic), he is on par with Odin, one of the most powerful characters in the Marvel universe.

Dormammu cannot be killed, since he will instantly reform in his own Dark Dimension. He is so powerful that, at one time, he managed to kill Doctor Strange (as the Ancient One), that latter being aided by the Guardians of the Galaxy and the Phoenix Force. His defeat, at that time, was just his banishment to his home dimension.

Tyrant

Tyrant
Tyrant

Simply put it, Tyrant is one of the supervillains created and bestowed by Galactus with his own power. A living machine, he was the herald for the devourer of worlds, until he rebelled and wanted to conquer the universe for himself. So powerful he is that at one time he captured some of the strongest superheroes in the Marvel universe, including in here the Silver Surfer, Beta Ray Bill, and Gladiator.

He wields such great powers that even Thanos himself was forced to flee in order to avoid a humiliating defeat, his allies already losing in the face of Tyrant.

So what kind of powers does he possess? Being infused with the power of Galactus, Tyrant was able to do anything he desired. From cosmic awareness and divine powers to invulnerability and immortality, he literally had it all. So he was second only to Galactus himself. When these two fought the final battle, Tyrant used his ability to manipulate any kind of technology and take control over his creator's ship, thus syphoning the latter's abilities.

Only when the Ultimate Nullifier was activated Tyrant was killed, destroyed at the same time with the ship of Galactus. Though it isn't certain that he was actually killed.

Korvac

Korvac
Korvac

Coming from the 31st century, Korvac was a skilled computer technician who betrayed Earth when attacked - the conquerors used his skills in order to supervise entire planets. Being just a regular human, he succumbed to exhaustion and collapsed. His upper body was then grafted to a hovering module, thus making him into an actual cyborg. In this way, he became an even more efficient slave.

In his plans to overthrow his capturers, he became entangled with the Grandmaster, one of the most powerful supervillains in the universe. Using his skills, he managed to copy Grandmaster's knowledge and powers. After encountering a mighty team led by Thor and the Guardians of the Galaxy, he flees into the 20th century. In here, he finds the ship of Galactus and steals all the knowledge it stored.

In this way, he becomes almost omnipotent, able to defeat all the Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy all alone. His ultimate purpose was to rid the universe of all the chaos. In his final fight, he wasn't killed - he simply committed suicide and allowed the remaining Avengers (Thor, Vision, and Iron Man) to deliver the finishing blow, not before reviving the superheroes who were already killed.

So Korvac is one of the supervillains who can defeat all most well-known superheroes. His abilities come from his contact with future alien technologies, from syphoning the knowledge and powers of the Elders of the Universe, and from copying the powers of Galactus himself. He is one of the supervillains who literally has infinite power.

Dweller in Darkness

Dweller in Darkness
Dweller in Darkness

Hercules, one of the strongest superheroes in the Marvel comic book universe, said that the Dweller in Darkness is the strongest demon in all universes. And we can believe him, since the Dweller asks for no permission when interfering in the dimension of other demons - at one time, he even teleported the Dream Dimension, ruled by Nightmare, as if the latter was of no significance.

The strongest of the Fear Lords, the Dweller in Darkness becomes more powerful as he feeds on the fear of people. Existent from the beginning of the universe, he has tremendous power over the mortal, being able to instill fear in almost everybody. He is so powerful that he doesn't get involved directly, usually using his pawns - even the other Fear Lords become his minions without even realizing that they were being used.

While the control of emotions is his most basic power, he has quite a few others, which make him one of the most redoubtable supervillains in the universe. As a feat of strength, he thought with Hercules and didn't lose, Hercules being the strongest of all superheroes.

He is literally immortal and he cannot be destroyed - his enemies, such as Doctor Strange, can only banish him back into his dimension.

Thanos

Thanos
Thanos

One of the most well-known supervillains thanks to the MCU, Thanos is what can be called a mutant Eternal, which makes him among the most powerful of his race. The fact that he has tangled with Death herself (of whom he is in love) made him even more powerful than before. The Mad Titan, even without the Infinity Gauntlet, has slapped Thor and Hulk as if they were second tier superheroes.

He is immortal and possesses all of the usual superpowers, including telepathy, teleportation, and so on.

However, he is best known for his search of mysterious and extremely powerful artifacts. The Infinity Gauntlet and its Infinity Stones are the best known - artifacts which, basically, bring him omnipotence and omniscience. Another artifact is the Heart of the Universe, which is even more powerful than the Infinity Gauntlet with all of the Infinity Stones, which makes the user the most powerful being in the Marvel comic book universe.

Thanos has possessed both of these artifacts at some point. Just by snapping his fingers, he was able to kill half of the universe. How many supervillains have managed that?

Galactus

Galactus
Galactus

The only reason why Galactus is one of the supervillains more powerful than Thanos is because nobody knows what a fully-fed Galactus can do.

Known as the Devourer of Worlds, because he takes his strength from feeding on living planets, the Celestial is actually pretty restraint as far as his feeding habits are concerned. Sure enough, over the course of time he has destroyed numerous planets. However, he eats just what is enough to sustain him.

And consuming just one planet is more than enough for him to overcome the powerful Odin and even kill a Celestial. Even starved, he was able to defeat Thanos (without the Infinity Gauntlet, though) - and this says a lot about him.

As far as his shape is concerned, he doesn't really have one. He appears in what shape and form a mind can comprehend - thus, for humans, he is a gigantic humanoid. As far as his powers are concerned, he has all of them, being nigh omnipotent and omniscient. For example, he can teleport at will across the universe or he can read minds on the far side of the universe.

As said, this while feeding on a single planet or just on a couple of them - destroying entire galaxies without even gorging. What happens when he actually has a feast?!?

Mad Jim Jaspers

Mad Jim Jaspers
Mad Jim Jaspers

A nigh-omnipotent mutant, Mad Jim Jaspers is one of the supervillains who can warp reality itself. However, unlike many other supervillains, he can bring the destruction of the omniverse (which is the sum of all multiverses, each of the multiverses being formed from infinite realities), since his powers are constantly growing. And he is also mad - which makes the threat even bigger.

Originally a British member of the Parliament, he began warping his own alternate universe to such a degree that his entire reality needed to be destroyed. If it hadn't been, then it would have meant the destruction of the entire omniverse.

And that was just a weaker version of Mad Jim Jaspers. The 616 version of the supervillain is said to be even more powerful than that. He can warp everything and everyone, he can increase all of his powers to unquantifiable levels, he can create life itself and raise the dead - everything that he can imagine is possible.

His only weakness was that he needed a reality in which to exist - if you can picture that.

Molecule Man

Molecule Man
Molecule Man

Another mentally unstable character, Molecule Man is the second most powerful of all Marvel supervillains.

Originally a shy man, dependent on his mother, he was an employee at an atomic power plant. By accident, he opened a portal to another dimension and came in contact with the powers of a Cosmic Cube. Severely scarred, he also gained tremendous powers over all matter and over all types of energies.

At first, he was only able to control the molecules of unliving objects - and that is because of his fearful and timid nature. However, as he became more experienced, these limitation disappeared. For example, he was able to transform Thing into glass and Iron Man into actual iron. But these are just simple feats - since all that exists is matter and energy, the Molecule Man was able to create entire galaxies.

When banished (back when he couldn't control living beings), he even created life. So this is just one of the very few supervillains from any comic book universes who can create galaxies and populate them at will.

His power over matter and energy gave him the ability to fight the most powerful of all Marvel supervillains, even if just for a short period of time.

Beyonder

Beyonder
Beyonder

The puppeteer of Battleworld is the most powerful among all of Marvel's supervillains. In the omniverse (the sum of multiverses), he is the embodiment of an entire multiverse - so he alone is millions times stronger than all the Marvel superheroes and supervillains combined. He is the sole responsible for the creation of Molecule Man.

When Owen opened the portal to the other dimension, he was infused with the power of the Cosmic Cube. However, most of that power escaped and gained sentience and curiosity - the Beyonder. So powerful this being was that, at one time, he killed Death (imagine how sad Thanos must have been), only to resurrect it afterwards.

His anger can be felt on a multiversal scale, which basically means that he can destroy multiverses with just his thought in an instant. Literally, he is like a biblical God - omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent, omni-everything.
