Suicide Squad – Who Will Bite The Dust?

Suicide Squad

Suicide Squad will hit theaters all across the world next year, on the 5th of August. And with a title like that and a director like David Ayer, we can say from the start that nobody is safe - when you are a villain strapped with a bomb (sort of and presumably) facing a greater baddie, you can even call yourself Will Smith and you will certainly face death at one point or another.

Sure enough, Suicide Squad will be a hard PG-13 flick - so there won't be any blood splattered all over the place. But that doesn't mean that the heroes will survive in the end. If we take a closer look at the director's last films, we can see that he doesn't really need a good reason to kill all of his main characters - take Fury for example, where the wimpiest of all the characters survives, while all the bigger names bite the dust.

Furthermore, Suicide Squad is just one of the first movies of the DC Expanded Universe - so it is still a world-building movie. And, mostly, the team is formed of second-tier characters - expendable characters whose deaths will serve at establishing the main baddies of the DCEU (or, at least, the main baddies for future Batman movies).

So who is going to die and who is going to live?

Cannon fodder

El Diablo, Killer Croc, Katana and Slipknot
El Diablo, Killer Croc, Katana and Slipknot

Straight off the bat, we are going to say that 4 characters will certainly not make it past the first Suicide Squad installment (oh, we are certain there will be sequels): Slipknot, Killer Croc, El Diablo and Katana. In this movie, we believe that they serve as secondary characters, meant to establish something - as said, that the greater baddie is truly evil (we don't know who that is yet).

Killer Croc and Katana are the most recognizable from the bunch, though it cannot be said that they are actually first tier - so they might make it alive, just because most of the moviegoers might know who they are.

But then again this is an Ayer flick - and when even the main characters aren't safe, why would secondary ones be?

Killing these four will once again reaffirm that the DCEU is not a place where anybody can mess around without suffering the consequences. So, besides establishing a bigger threat, these deaths are actually necessary for another reason as well.

What are the chances for any of these four to make it out alive? There aren't really any - as said, Katana and Killer Croc might be the most recognizable of the lot. But that doesn't mean anything at all.

Basically, Slipknot, El Diablo, Killer Croc and Katana are just cannon fodder.

Enchantress

Enchantress
Enchantress

Little is known about Suicide Squad's Enchantress - rumored to be the reason why the squad is formed from the first place, she is like the wild card of the movie.

A powerful magic user, she is almost certainly going to die - but only in the beginning of the flick. As we see in the trailer, Cara Delevingne's character emerges as the Enchantress from beneath the dirt. If we take a look at the comics, she does have the power to resurrect others - so what if her origin story also presumes her own death?

For that matter, we don't even know if she is capable of dying - what we do know, though, is that she is too an important character to kill off after just one single flick. Besides the rumor saying that she is the reason why the Suicide Squad forms, there is also another rumor tying her to the planned Justice League Dark flick - so no, there is no way David Ayer will touch her.

She might not be as well-known as other characters on this list - however, she is certainly one of the few whose presence might be required sometime in the future, in other DCEU movies.

So we say that Enchantress will be a lucky survivor of this flick - agree or not, Cara Delevingne's journey into the DCEU is just beginning.

Captain Boomerang

Captain Boomerang

For some, Captain Boomerang may seem like another character who is certain to die - just like the first 4 opening this list, he seems like dead meet from the very beginning. Plus, Jay Courtney plays him - and, come on, he can barely be called an actor (he must have a great agent, because we cannot understand how he can get roles in so many big movies).

But a huge twist might be prepared for this character. In the comics, he is a despised villain, a character whose obnoxiousness has no limits. Suicide Squad may make a very powerful statement by keeping him alive - the world isn't fair and even the worst human beings won't be punished for their acts.

Even if it will be an open ending for him, he won't be killed on-screen. His fate will most likely be unaddressed, being (maybe) the only character whose whereabouts aren't known when the squad disbands.

He might die as well - but we really doubt it. Jay Courtney's character is very unlikeable and his death would probably please the audiences. But we don't see the DCEU and David Ayer just bending over in order to please the average moviegoer.

So what happens to Captain Boomerang is everybody's guess. We might want him to die and he will maybe do that - but, unlike with the previous characters on this list, we are not so sure.

Rick Flag

Rick Flag and...

The cards are stacked against Rick Flag, the leader of the Suicide Squad - he isn't one of them. Reportedly, he is the eyes and ears of Amanda Waller, the one responsible for the creation of the squad. He is a military man, so he is basically a hero among villains - why would they let him live?

A rumor dating back when Tom Hardy was still cast said that Rick Flag will be the hidden villain of the movie. So, according to that rumor, he will double-cross the team of villains - which once again makes us believe that they'll deal with him in one way or another, most likely towards the end of the flick.

And he is a disposable character, who can be replaced in the following movies. For example, Steve Trevor might take his place (as the rumor goes, Chris Pine will play both the grandfather of Steve Trevor, during the first Wonder Woman flick, as well as the nephew).

And even if Joel Kinnaman's character isn't a villainous one, he could still be killed. If he is indeed the only hero in a team of villains, killing him will once again make the statement that the world isn't fair. And this will be an interesting twist, which could lead to different other choices for a leader in a future Suicide Squad flicks.

So we do believe that he will die - most likely towards the end of the movie.

In the trailer, we see him and Enchantress (before she transforms) getting close to each other. If she is indeed the one the Suicide Squad is after, he might just sacrifice himself for her to live.

Deadshot

Deadshot
Deadshot

Besides Harley, Deadshot is the most famous of all the current Suicide Squad members - so we may believe that killing him doesn't make any sense. After all, he is the unspoken leader of the team and he is skilled enough to avoid being killed.

But if we look closer we can see that he is the one whose death will actually mean something on the long run. Sure enough, he is a villain - however, he is a rather tragic character who actually has a reason to fight on.

We already know this, from the trailer - remember the leaked set pics where he looked like a pimp? The trailer revealed that he does have a daughter in this universe. And he intends to do everything that it takes in order to keep her safe.

We don't know yet who is he going up against - but we can bet that he will sacrifice himself in the end. He is, most likely, the one character with whom everybody can empathize. So his death would underline a somewhat perfect redemption story.

Will Smith portrays Deadshot in Suicide Squad - and he did die in his movies, heroically (though, at times, unnecessarily) in order to save someone else. This character is meant for him. And this character will die.

To be noted, there is also a rumor saying that he will be involved, to a certain degree, in a romantic relationship with Harley. Imagine what the Joker will do to him"¦

Amanda Waller

Amanda Waller
Amanda Waller

Amanda Waller is the one responsible for forming the team. She is the one to whom Rick Flag reports. She is the one holding her finger on the trigger, ready to punish those who are fool enough to believe that she can be tricked.

We don't have the slightest doubt that she will live. She is too an important character to be killed after just one movie. Suicide Squad will just introduce her - we can bet that she will pop in future DCEU movies, as the one watching over all the superpowered beings, keeping them in check.

It is rumored that she will make an appearance in Batman v Superman also, or at least that she will be mentioned. And, if the rumors are true, we won't be surprised if she is the one who captured the Flash and Aquaman for Lex Luthor.

So, just like with some characters on this list, we are certain that she will live on, towards other appearances in other DCEU movies - Suicide Squad is just the beginning for her. Even if the concept of a team of villains proves to be ineffective, we can bet that she will find other means of fighting powerful supervillains.

Harley Quinn

Harley Quinn
Harley Quinn

Why would she die? Well, Harley Quinn could die just to show how psychotic the Joker is. And he will want to kill her if he senses that he has been unfaithful to him.

But, come on- she won't die. She is probably the most famous of all DC female characters, besides Wonder Woman and Supergirl. And the DCEU could use her, in subsequent Suicide Squad movies, as the leader of the team (we are that certain that Deadshot and Rick Flag will bite the dust).

Furthermore, Margot Robbie is one of the hottest actresses of the moment - even if her acting chops are actually quite slim. We are certain that the powers that be will try to use her for as much as possible.

She is the perfect Harley Quinn and we can certainly say that this is just the beginning of her story.

The Joker

The Joker
The Joker

Is Suicide Squad going to kill one of the most recognizable comic book characters ever?

Well, we don't think so. But there is a possibility for that to happen. And all just in the name of surprising the fans. If the Joker is killed in his first outing in the DCEU, this will once again show that the powers that be aren't afraid of offing anybody.

And even if that happens, that doesn't mean that he cannot appear in future movies. One of the rumors concerning the first Batman flick says that it will be a prequel - the story of how the Joker was captured. So we will probably see Leto once again.

But, just like with Harley, come on - how can they kill him? Here's another rumor, which certainly hasn't escape you - the first Batman movie will be a Red Hood adaptation. The Suicide Squad trailer shows how the Joker kills someone with a crowbar (or something resembling one). This is the perfect setting for adapting Red Hood on the big screens.

And we do need the Joker for that.

Furthermore, despite all the hype and all the stories from the set, this isn't his movie - he is, in a way, just a secondary character. So we are most certain that he will shine in other movies as well.

But, unlike with Harley, we aren't so sure that he will survive.

Suicide Squad – who lives and who dies?

The Joke was on you
The Joke was on you

Out of all the characters who will appear next year in Suicide Squad, we can say for certain that at least 4 will die. These are the second tier Slipknot, Katana, Killer Croc and El Diablo.

As far as all the others are concerned, the most likely to live are Harley Quinn and Amanda Waller. And even they aren’t actually safe – there could be some twists along the way. Which is a good thing.

Back when the movie was still shooting, tons of pics and clips were leaked from the set. The fans began shouting in outrage, saying that they already know what happens in Suicide Squad – in  the entire movie, that is.

Really? Do they know anything at all?

What do you think? Which characters will die in the first Suicide Squad movie?
