One of the most surprising things in the Logan trailer is that Wolverine’s body is covered with scars. His hands are also bloody when he unsheathes his claws. What gives? Wasn’t he supposed to have unparalleled regenerative abilities? Wasn’t he supposed to heal from anything almost instantly?

According to James Mangold, he has so many scars because he has aged considerably since the last time we saw him (in this timeline, it would be Days of Future Past). And, as he aged, his powers were diminished – in the sense that he now bears the marks of the fights.

Of course, the story is much more complex than that – especially if Logan is indeed the broken man the trailer shows him to be. Anything from aging to psychological scarring can be a reason for his diminished powers.

Maybe this is a secondary reason for his decision to move into a smelting plant and make a home (and hospital for Professor X) out of a water tower – to get away from the physical pain, as well. I guess time (and other trailers and clips) will reveal this as well.
