Captain America: Civil War – First Teaser Breakdown

Captain America and Bucky vs. Iron Man

Have you seen the first teaser trailer for Captain America: Civil War? We bet you did - and, if you didn't, here it is!

The teaser was released last night, during the Jimmy Kimmel Live! show - a special episode dedicated to Marvel. Besides Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr., Krysten Ritter was also there, to promote Jessica Jones, which was released 5 days ago - a pretty nice interview, especially in here, where the host and the actress talk about the Avengers and the Defenders.

But, coming back to the Captain America III trailer, what can we make of it? Did it reveal anything of major importance for the MCU and its future movies? Was it a teaser trailer to satisfy everybody's requirements? Or do the fans have to wait until the Star Wars: The Force Awakens for the first trailer?

In here you may find some answers to these questions - who made the cut and who didn't, what drives the plot, and so on. So you can continue on the next page, if you want - but keep in mind that some spoilers might be dropped here and there!

Below you will find the first teaser for Captain America's next adventure!

The Sokovia Accords

The Accords - and that is definitely Black Widow
The Accords – and that is definitely Black Widow

We heard about the Accords for the first time in the credit-scene of Ant-Man - when Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson find Bucky Barnes with his hand trapped in what seems to be a big vice. The trailer begins with this particular scene - and, by the looks of it, it is the two Avengers who have captured the Winter Soldier. According to the latter, he is being framed for hits around the world, even if he is not an assassin any longer. Tony Stark, though, wouldn't believe him.

So what are the Sokovia Accords? Well, it is the Framework for the Registration and Deployment of Enhanced Individuals - and, as its name suggests it, it must have been written or at least made public after the events of Age of Ultron, when the Avengers had to drop Sokovia from the sky.

And yes, this is the correspondent of the comic book's Registration Act - basically, all the enhanced individuals (expression uttered by Captain America in Age of Ultron, during the first encounter with Quicksilver) are placed in the Government's suborder. But, besides this event, is there any other reason why a part of the Avengers (namely Tony Stark) would subscribe to this new law and even enforce it?

We should take into account in here the fact that Tony (with Banner's help) was the one to create Ultron - so he might consider that the Avengers need to be supervised, after SHIELD dissolved. But there is also another reason why he might disagree with Captain America - and this involves a scene not seen in the trailer (or maybe it is): the African market battle, featuring Crossbones.

From this teaser, we get the idea that Bucky is being framed for something he didn't do - could Tony suspect that he is the one whose orders Crossbones answers? It may be so - and if we pair this with the fact that the Winter Soldier is suspected of killing Tony's parents, we know why Iron Man will clash with Steve Rogers.

Ruined Friendships

Divided they fall
Divided they fall

If the Avengers: Age of Ultron trailers emphasized that the money shot of the movie is the Hulk vs. the Hulkbuster scene, the Captain America: Civil War trailer puts a great deal of interest on something else. It isn't all about the action in this one (though Bucky and Cap taking on Iron Man surely got us excited) - instead, it is about broken friendships. Some are mended (Steve and Bucky), some are ruined (Steve and Tony).

And these scenes (particularly the one with Tony) are played to perfection - we might say, from what we saw in the trailer. Captain America explains why he chose (or didn't have a choice) to help Bucky - and is pretty understandable. After all, he is his last surviving childhood friend - and, in Captain America: Winter Soldier, Steve was ready to give is life in order to prove how much he cared.

Right in the feels
Right in the feels

But on the other hand we have the relationship between Steve and Tony - pretty much like any great friendship, it did have its hiccups (which are more than obvious in the first and second Avengers flicks). But still - it seemed pretty real to us. And when Tony says, So was I (your friend), something breaks in us.

So yeah - this particular teaser trailer emphasizes what the Civil War is all about: it isn't about the spectacle of the battle itself, but about brothers going against brothers. Just like in any Civil War.

Blink and you'll miss it!

Scarlet Witch takes flight - and the only shot of Hawkeye
Scarlet Witch takes flight – and the only shot of Hawkeye

The superheroes are (almost) all here, in this first teaser trailer - Black Widow (who is also - maybe - holding the Sokovia Accords document), Steve Rogers, Tony Stark, Falcon (who has an awesome kick-scene, if we can call it so), and so on.

We even catch a glimpse of Scarlet Witch - who, by the way, can fly now.

There is also War Machine, who might just bite the dust in this one.

Who killed War Machine?
Who killed War Machine?

Who is responsible? Well, one of these two character - either Scarlet Witch, either the Winter Soldier. Scarlet Witch is a contender because this is her MO - as we saw in Age of Ultron, she likes tearing robots (in extension, armored suits) apart. But the best chances are that Bucky delivered the final blow.

As we see in the teaser, there is a scene in which he goes straight for Iron Man's arc reactor, as if wanting to tear it apart - without it, Tony would become helpless. Could this also be the case with War Machine? It sure seems so, since his suit has no arc reactor - just one big gaping hole, with wires hanging out of it.

Agent 13 and Martin Freeman's mysterious character

Besides these all, we also catch just a small glimpse of Agent 13, as well as of Martin Freeman's mysterious character - in the same scene, of course (most likely when Cap and Falcon's outfits are taken away).

Crossbones also appears somewhere in the background - way in the background!

These are, basically, the teams, with one notable absence - Vision, who is the game-changer. He is, apparently, on the side of Tony Stark. The fact that he isn't in the trailers could be explained in two ways.

The first one is that the special effects are not completed (and this is a pretty anorexic explanation). The second one is that he drops out of the Civil War, realizing that it is madness - which would go along his philosophy, which was captured in Age of Ultron. Furthermore, he might leave just because he has other more important business to attend to - and James Gunn did say that he'd love to have Vision in Guardians of the Galaxy

Ant-Man can't be seen also in the first teaser for Captain America III - most likely he is tiny already (which also means that he is in every scene"¦) Hawkeye gets very little screen time, while there is no Spider-Man in sight.

The newcomer

Black Panther
Black Panther

Black Panther is also featured in this first teaser - and now we get a better look at his suit. We must say, though, that the concept art looked awesome! We don't know what to say now - especially his mask, which seems too mechanical for our tastes. Maybe Marvel should steer clear (whenever it can) from giving such looks to its characters.

What is certain is that Black Panther is also enhanced in some way - and we don't believe it is because of the suit. There is a scene in which he chases the Winter Soldier, while being chased by Captain America - and he cannot be caught! Also, in the airport scene, he puts up a fight, kicking Bucky in the face, as if it was nothing.

But why is he involved in the Civil War at all? Well, as said, Crossbones does frame Bucky. And there is a scene (which seems to have a very official setting) in which a big explosion engulfs a room filled with people - maybe someone he cared about was there.

By the way, we don't know the outcome of Bucky's fight with Black Panther - the scene with the fallen War Machine clearly happens after the clash from the airport. And if the Winter Soldier was the one to pull his arc reactor out of his chest"¦

Other (and most likely villainous) characters

Ross
Ross

The great absent is, though, Zemo, about whom we don't know a single thing (yeah, we've had the interviews and it is clear that he won't have a mask - but is it too much to ask for at least some concept art?)

There is something which hints at its presence, making him the puppeteer behind the entire Civil War - the tagline which appears on all the three official posters released today: Divided we fall. Which is a bit ominous, don't you think?

So yeah - we believe that Zemo is the one who orchestrates the entire Civil War. And when the heroes will find out they will surely unite once again"¦ Or maybe not. Maybe Captain America will die, just like in the comics, and the remaining characters will realize the errors of their ways.

Another characters is introduced, General Ross, thus reminding everybody that the Incredible Hulk is an MCU flick. Little is known about his character, other than the fact that he is also pro-Accords. The fans speculate that he will turn into the Red Hulk - but this is too outlandish and out of the blue. He will most likely have a recurring role starting with Captain America: Civil War (which might lead to a Thunderbolts movie).
