Suicide Squad 2: Director Frontrunner and Shooting Date

Suicide Squad failed to impress both critics and moviegoers, but it still managed to attract $745 million at the worldwide box office. That was quite an achievement, and we wonder how everything would have turned out if David Ayer had invested more than three weeks in writing the script.

In any event, a Suicide sequel was soon announced, and a number of directors met with the studio after David Ayer announced that he would direct the Gotham City Sirens spin-off featuring Harley Quinn.

It was rumored that Mel Gibson would direct, and he confirmed that he’d met with studio officials.

However, Deadline reported that the studio had someone else in mind for Suicide Squad 2. They revealed that Jaume Collet-Serra (The Shallows) was the frontrunner to direct Will Smith and Margot Robbie in the sequel.

That’s not all! According to The Hollywood Reporter, Zak Penn (The Avengers and Ready Player One) has already written a first treatment for the movie. This is great news, especially when you take into account how little time was invested in the script for the first flick.

THR added that Warner Bros. intends to begin production for Suicide Squad 2 in mid-2018. This confirmed what Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flag) previously said about the shooting schedule.

Based on this latter reveal, and given the way the DC Extended Universe movies have been made and released, we can expect Warner Bros. to release Suicide Squad 2 in 2019, although some say that it would be more realistic to shoot for early 2020.

So far, there’s been no word about the film’s rating, but we’re hoping it’s rated R!
