Spawn: No Origin Story

Todd McFarlane revealed that the Spawn reboot’s main focus won't be on Spawn. Instead, the movie will center on a supporting character from the comics named Twitch. This gimmick may have raised a few eyebrows, but it will allow the Spawn creator to maintain creative control over the movie by reducing the budget to a bare minimum.

Other than that, and the movie’s hard-R rating, we don't know anything else about it. But we’re definitely interested in learning more!

McFarlane recently made another interesting reveal during an interview with Yahoo! Entertainment. He said that we won't see Al Simmons, the deceased marine who became Spawn, in the film. In other words, McFarlane asserted that we won't see the titular character's origin story.

I always come back to Jaws - not that I have a shark in Spawn! But that shark was enormous. And at any time in the movie, did they tell me why the shark was so damn big? No! Did it matter to me? No! All that mattered was that it was big and in the same vicinity as humans. Or John Carpenter's The Thing: Where did the aliens come from? I don't know! What was its reason for taking over bodies? I don't know! It just was. I'm okay without an origin. Just give me a compelling story, scare the s*** out of me from time to time, and I'm along for the ride"¦To me, this story is my way of saying, “Spawn's been around for 25 years, and he's been evolving for 25 years. This is where he's at now.” I can't do the same story over and over.

McFarlane does have a point. For example, Marvel had another hit when they focused on a non-origin story about Spider-Man (whose origins were covered by other franchises). However, Spawn is a different kind of beast. While some of us know and understand where he came from, we can’t say the same for the more general audience.

The right kind of marketing campaign should sell the movie as a story about a detective and supernatural events, and that will probably overcome that shortcoming.

For the moment, there is no certain release date for Spawn.
