Not long ago, Sony Pictures had plans for a complete Spider-Man universe, including a third Amazing Spider-Man installment, a Sinister Six spinoff, a Venom solo movie, and a team movie featuring some female characters from the webslinger's comics. But following their deal with Marvel Studios, we’ve heard nothing more about those plans.
Since they teamed with Marvel, do they plan to make a whole Spider-Man universe? Do they have plans for more work with Marvel? During a recent interview, a correspondent from The Hollywood Reporter asks Sony Pictures Entertainment chairman Tom Rothman about it. He responds, “Yes to both those questions. It's been fantastic, our relationship with Marvel.”
This means that Homecoming is just the beginning of the partnership between Sony and Marvel. When the interviewer asks about who holds the authority to greenlight projects, Rothman says, “Sony has the ultimate authority. But we have deferred the creative lead to Marvel, because they know what they're doing.”
Moreover, the Sony head honcho guarantees that they have no intentions to trim the costs of the franchise. He explains:
I want to make money. And sometimes you make money by trimming costs and sometimes by investing in things that are profitable. A movie like Spider-Man by Marvel, that's not inexpensive. But it's a great investment. Knowing that Marvel has such a clear, creative vision, I sleep very well at night.
There's also an animated Spider-Man movie scheduled to release on December 21, 2018. Sony is working on this one independently. Rothman holds the animated movie in high regard, and is looking forward to it, saying, “(Phil) Lord and (Chris) Miller, who did the Lego movies, are doing an animated Spider-Man. And it has a very breakthrough look to it, and a fantastic story"¦”
