The wait has been long but director Matt Reeves has finally shared some details regarding The Batman Part II. The first film focused on Robert Pattinson’s version of the Caped Crusader hit theaters in March 2022, a full two and a half years ago. Warner Bros. quickly gave the green light to a follow-up, but development has been slow going. Now though, Reeves has revealed a little bit about the story, as well as some of what we can expect.
In a recent interview with SFX Magazine (via Variety), Reeves discussed The Batman sequel, which is set to begin filming in early 2025. According to Reeves, the sequel is going to be an “epic” story that will showcase different sides of the character. It’s also going to go places that the filmmaker says Bruce Wayne couldn’t have anticipated in the first installment.
“[The Batman Part II is] going to dig into the epic story about deeper corruption, and it goes into places that he couldn’t anticipate in the first one. The seeds of where this goes are all in the first movie. It expands in a way that will show you aspects of the character you never got to see. Batman is constantly battling these forces. But those forces can’t be entirely exorcised. So the next movie delves deeper into that.”
Before the sequel arrives, Colin Farrell will return in the HBO miniseries The Penguin. Reeves also touched on the upcoming show and how it will connect to the next movie. Per Reeves, the show will help tee up the sequel pretty directly.
“Colin [Farrell] will be part of the movie…We’ve shared [the script] as we’ve been going along with DC and the studio and they’re super excited…There are details that actually connect right into the way the next movie begins, and the way that Oz enters that world as we hand the baton back to Batman, and Batman is on another case.”
Unfortunately, development has been slow for the sequel even though The Batman was a huge hit. Warner Bros. delayed The Batman Part II a full year to 2026 back in March. The plus side is the studio isn’t rushing things. Reeves, speaking further, touched on some tonal things for his version of Batman’s universe. In short? Don’t expect to see any supernatural villains like Gentleman Ghost squaring off with Pattinson’s Dark Knight.
“What was important to me was to find a way to take these pop icons, these mythical characters that everybody knows, and translate it so that Gotham feels like a place in our world. We might push to the edge of the fantastical but we would never go into full fantastical. It’s meant to feel quite grounded. It doesn’t mean that you won’t see characters that people love. That’s exactly what we want to do. Gentleman Ghost is probably pushed a bit too far for us to be able to find a way to do, but there is a fun way to think about how we would take characters that might push over into a bit of the fantastical and find a way to make sense of that.”
The Batman Part II is currently set to hit theaters on October 2, 2026.
