Samaritan 2 In The Works With Sylvester Stallone At Amazon

Sylvester Stallone now has his very own superhero movie franchise. Amazon Studios has announced that they are making a sequel to the action star’s 2022 original superhero Movie Samaritan. The film was released late last summer on Prime Video after the streamer had acquired it from MGM. Now, more than a year later, the company has decided it’s time to make Samaritan 2

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Bragi F. Schut is set to pen the screenplay for the sequel. Schut also penned the screenplay for the first movie. Stallone, in addition to his starring role, is on board as a producer. Julius Avery (The Pope’s Exorcist) directed the first movie. It has not been confirmed whether or not he will return to the director’s chair. There is no word on how quickly the movie could see the light of day but it does seem to be in the early stages.

Here is the synopsis for Samaritan.

“Thirteen-year-old Sam Cleary suspects that his mysterious and reclusive neighbor Mr. Smith is actually a legend hiding in plain sight. Twenty-five years ago, Granite City’s super-powered vigilante, Samaritan, was reported dead after a fiery warehouse battle with his rival, Nemesis. Most believe Samaritan perished in the fire, but some in the city, like Sam, have hope that he is still alive. With crime on the rise and the city on the brink of chaos, Sam makes it his mission to coax his neighbor out of hiding to save the city from ruin.”

The cast was led by Sylvester Stallone as Samaritan. The cast also included Javon “Wanna” Walton, Pilou Asbæk, Dascha Polanco and Moises Arias. It’s unclear who, if anyone, will return for the sequel alongside Stallone. Right now, with the Screen Actors Guild strike still ongoing, no deals can be made. Once the strike finally ends, Amazon can try to firm things up on that front. With the writer’s strike ending recently, Schut is free to get the script finished up.

Stallone is no stranger to comic book movies. In the ‘90s, he made Judge Dredd, adapting the cult comic character for the screen. More recently, the action star appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. He also voiced King Shark in 2021’s The Suicide Squad. But this is the first time he’s had the opportunity to lead a superhero franchise. The fact that it came from an original idea not based on a pre-existing comic is pretty unique.

Samaritan 2 does not currently have a release date.
