It looks like a Batman Beyond video game is in development. We need to caution right up top that this is just a rumor for the time being, but one that has a lot of evidence to support it. With that, we should also mention before anyone gets too excited that this game, if it is indeed coming, is still years away. So don’t hold your breath waiting to secure a pre-order or anything like that.
The rumor comes from known industry insider Lunatic Ignus (via Geek Tyrant). While few details are available, the game would take inspiration from the much-beloved Batman Beyond animated series. While it wouldn’t adopt the show’s animation style, it would include “elements from the show’s storylines” that “could be expanded upon to craft a unique experience.” Rather crucially, it would also be a PlayStation exclusive, which would be a big deal.
To further support this rumor, Bloomberg recently ran a pretty thorough report on the state of Warner Bros. Games. To put it lightly, things aren’t going particularly well over there after the failure of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which lost $200 million, as well as the online game MultiVersus. The report concluded by noting that “Rocksteady is looking to return to Batman for a single-player game.”
The only hiccup is that this Batman project is “years away from landing.” So what we’re probably looking at is something that would launch on the PlayStation 6, as opposed to the current gen PlayStation 5. As for Rocksteady, they have a long history with this franchise. The studio developed the Batman: Arkahm games, which remain popular to this day. The Batman: Arkham trilogy was ported to the Nintendo Switch in 2023, cementing them as enduring favorites.
A Batman Beyond, potentially set in the Arkham universe, would make a lot of sense. The series, which sees Terry McGinnis take over as Batman in a future version of Gotham City, is wildly popular. It would be a fresh take with lots of opportunity to craft a satisfying gaming experience.
Here is the synopsis for Batman Beyond.
“Terry McGinnis was just an ordinary teenager…until his father was mysteriously murdered. Suspecting foul play at his father’s company Wayne/Powers Corporation, Terry meets Bruce Wayne and learns a secret identity hidden for decades. Now too old to battle injustice, Wayne refuses to help. So Terry does what any brash young kid would do: steal the Batsuit and take matters into his own hands! Vowing to avenge his father’s death, Terry dons the high-tech suit tricked out with jetpacks, a supersensitive microphone and even camouflage capabilities in search of his father’s assassin.”
The Batman Beyond video game does not currently have a release date.
