Is the live-action Masters of the Universe movie getting a sequel? Director Travis Knight has weighed in. The filmmaker, who also made the Transformers spin-off Bumblebee, delivered a very well-liked interpretation of the beloved ‘80s franchise. The only problem is it didn’t do very well at the box office relative to its large budget. Still, Amazon has deep pockets and if they want a franchise badly enough, they could still roll the dice. Unfortunately, for the time being, that doesn’t sound very likely.
Speaking recently with Screen Rant, Knight was asked about the prospect of Masters of the Universe 2. “These things are out of our control,” Knight said. Speaking further, he, without saying it directly, made it clear that he certainly hasn’t heard anything to indicate it’s going to happen. Here’s what he had to say about it.
“It was such a joy making that movie, I had so much fun working with that team. We had so much fun, and I think that comes through in the experience of watching the movie. In the end, these sorts of decisions are out of our control, you always imagine where these people’s lives go after the end of the movie, and if the universe, in its wisdom, asks us to make more of these things, we would be delighted to give them more. But, in the end, that’s out of our control, which is why every single movie you make, you put everything you have into it, and you just hope that the movie lives on its own and finds connection with the people you’re trying to reach.”
The MOTU movie was in the works for a long, long time. It was at one point going to be made at Netflix. However, the streamer bailed on the project after investing millions. Their loss was Amazon’s gain though. Despite earning strong reviews, Masters of the Universe made just $113 million at the box office against a $170 million budget. But fans had hope as the movie became a gigantic streaming hit on Prime Video. Evidently, not quite enough to get a sequel going though. At least not yet.
Here is the synopsis for Masters of the Universe.
“After being separated for 15 years, the Sword of Power leads Prince Adam back to Eternia where he discovers his home shattered under the fiendish rule of Skeletor. To save his family and his world, Adam must join forces with his closest allies, Teela and Duncan/Man-At-Arms, and embrace his true destiny as He-Man—the most powerful man in the universe.”
The cast for the movie is led by Nicholas Galitzine (Red, White & Royal Blue) as He-Man/Prince Adam, Jared Leto (Suicide Squad) as Skeletor, Idris Elba (Thor) as Duncan/Man-At-Arms and Camila Mendes (Upgraded) as Teela. The ensemble also includes Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids) as Roboto, Alison Brie (Community) as Evil-Lyn, James Purefoy (Solomon Kane) as King Randor, Morena Baccarin (Deadpool & Wolverine) as Sorceress, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson (Alpha) as Malcolm/Fisto and Charlotte Riley (Entity) as Queen Marlena.
