The future of the DC Universe begins in December. Warner Bros. and DC Studios have announced that James Gunn’s animated series Creature Commandos is set to arrive on the Max streaming service on December 5. This will be the first official project as part of Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC reboot, with much more to come in the years ahead.
Gunn, known best as the director of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, wrote the series and serves as an executive producer. The series spans seven episodes, with new episodes dropping weekly following the premiere. This is the first project to come to fruition at DC Studios since Gunn and Safran were put in charge of the division in late 2022. The first slate of projects for the new DC Universe was announced in January 2023. This is truly just the tip of the iceberg.
Here is the synopsis for Creature Commandos.
“Creature Commandos tracks a secret team of incarcerated monsters recruited for missions deemed too dangerous for humans. When all else fails… they’re your last, worst option.”
“I’m used to dealing with oddballs and irregular types and weirdos,” Gunn explained recently to Entertainment Weekly. “That’s what Guardians is, and Creature Commandos is kind of like Guardians without the sentimentality. The Guardians are all really good characters at their heart, and that just isn’t necessarily the case with the creatures.”
Meanwhile, Gunn has wrapped filming his new Superman movie, which stars David Corenswet as our new Man of Steel. He’s also busy making Peacemaker season 2 as we speak. Other projects on deck for the DCU include Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, a Swamp Thing movie, The Brave and the Bold and The Authority. Several other TV shows are in the works as well, including Waller, Lanterns and Booster Gold. Speaking further to EW, Gunn explained that Superman is where the new DCU will truly get going.
“Superman is the true start of everything, it’s a humongous epic. This is a way for people to just take a little nibble and see what it tastes like. There are a ton of fun references to other DC stuff, a bunch of hints for things that are coming. So I think it’s just an extraordinarily fun way to start.”
The series stars Steve Agee as Economos, Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana, Anya Chalotra as Circe, Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Sean Gunn as GI Robot & Weasel, David Harbour as Frankenstein, Alan Tudyk as Dr. Phosphorus, Indira Varma as The Bride and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. Peter Safran, Dean Lorey and Sam Register are also on board as executive producers.
Creature Commandos begins streaming December 5 on Max.
