The new Hellboy movie has just taken one major step towards release. The upcoming reboot titled Hellboy: The Crooked Man has officially secured distribution. Up-and-coming distributor Ketchup Entertainment has secured the right to the film, which is being produced by Millennium Media. The upcoming adaptation of the Dark Horse Comics series has already been filmed, with production taking place earlier this year.
According to Deadline, Ketchup picked up the rights to the film recently. No financial details were disclosed. Ketchup isn’t a big name in the game just yet, but the studio did distribute Ben Affleck’s sci-fi film Hypnotic earlier this year, which was directed by Robert Rodriguez. The Crooked Man will be R-rated and will be more of a horror spin on the material. It’s also a lower budget affair. Ketchup Entertainment CEO Gareth West had this to say about it.
“We are very excited by this latest acquisition, this film holds a special place in the hearts of fans worldwide and we are committed to preserving and building its legacy as we bring the film to fans and new audiences. We are confident that our collaboration with Jeffrey Greenstein and the exceptional team at Millennium Media will enable us to achieve just that.”
Millennium Media’s Jeffrey Greenstein had this to add.
“At a time when content is never more in demand, it’s exciting to partner with a group who is not only passionate about movies, but who are also stepping up to distribute the types of commercial films that we believe audiences crave. Despite all of the changes in the marketplace, it’s refreshing to start building a pipeline with Ketchup and we are excited to build upon this first film together.”
Jack Kesy (Deadpool 2) leads the cast as the titular character. Jefferson White, Adeline Rudolph, Joseph Marcell, Leah McNamara, Hannah Margetson and Martin Bassindale round out the ensemble. Brian Taylor (Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance) directed the film, which was co-written by the character’s creator Mike Mignola. Chris Golden, who has collaborated with Mignola in the comics, co-wrote the script.
Here is the synopsis for Hellboy: The Crooked Man.
“The new film will see Hellboy and a rookie BPRD agent stranded in 1950s rural Appalachia. There, they discover a small community haunted by witches, led by a local devil with a troubling connection to Hellboy’s past: the Crooked Man.”
Hellboy: The Crooked Man does not currently have a release date but it is expected sometime in 2024.
