Is this the end for the Sorcerer Supreme? That seems to be the indication, as Doctor Strange is set to conclude its run in the pages of Marvel Comics with issue #20 this September, as reported by Bleeding Cool. It sounds like the good doctor may be hanging up his cloak of levitation for good. Then again, this is a comic book we’re talking about here, so probably not. But still, this is an interesting development.

Here’s what we know. Marvel Comics sent out their September solicitations recently and they’re giving the ol’ ax to a few books. That’s not terribly uncommon. Marvel publishes a lot of titles, which is part of the reason they’re able to win out over DC in the marketplace. It’s a quantity thing. As a result, every once in a while, they’ve got to end some titles that aren’t selling very well.

That said, Doctor Strange, which is currently being written by comics great Mark Waid, is more of a middle of the pack title. It’s been up and running since last year. There’s no reason to cancel it over poor sales. In any event, based on the synopsis provided with the solicitation, not only is this particular book ending, but Stephen Strange may be making a very serious life change. The synopsis reads as follows.

“An event so epic shakes Doctor Strange to the core and makes him completely reevaluate his life and role. This event is so huge that it makes this the LAST ISSUE OF DOCTOR STRANGE!”

Does this mean Stephen Strange will no longer be the Sorcerer Supreme? What will he do instead? For now, we have precious few answers. And we’ve still got a few issues to get through before this epic event comes to pass.

In all likelihood, we’re going to get a new ongoing title featuring Stephen Strange, perhaps on something of a spiritual journey, coming our way after this title wraps up. Especially with Doctor Strange 2 finally gearing up for production.
