Warning: Spoilers ahead for Creature Commandos Episode 6
Welcome to the new DC Universe, Batman. Despite the fact that no actor has technically been cast, the Caped Crusader made his first appearance in the new DCU. James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) and producer Peter Safran are now the heads of DC Studios. They are rebooting the whole franchise and the animated series Creature Commandos technically serves as the start of the new universe. It begins, in earnest, with Superman next summer. Even so, Gunn dropped a pretty big reveal into the show’s latest episode.
Creature Commandos episode 6 features our first glimpse at the new DC Universe’s Batman. You can see him in all of his glory in the above image. He’s mostly seen as a silhouette. Nevertheless, it’s a big deal. This will not be Ben Affleck, who was the Batman of the Snyderverse. Rather, it will eventually be a new actor. Who is it? That remains to be seen. In an interview with Rotten Tomatoes, Gunn explained that’s largely why the Dark Knight is lurking in the shadows in the episode.
“When they first gave it to me, we saw a lot more Batman. And I was saying, ‘I am not ready to commit to that. I’m not ready to commit to that. I’m not ready to commit to that.’ So I was just like, ‘More silhouette, more silhouette, more silhouette.’”
David Corenswet (Pearl) is playing our new Superman. Other major roles in the DCU have already been filled as well. Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge) will lead the Lanterns TV show as John Stewart. Kyle Chandler (Godzilla vs. Kong) is playing Hal Jordan. Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) is also playing Supergirl in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
Speaking further, Gunn explained that Batman already exists in this new universe. We won’t be getting an origin story for Gotham’s famed hero. Rather, he will already be a fixture of the world that Gunn and Safran are crafting. An important fixture at that.
“He already exists in this universe. Just like when we come to the Superman movie, we see the Superman already exists. He’s already known by the people in Metropolis. We don’t need to hear the origin story again. That’s just a way to introduce that Batman is a part of this universe. He’s an important part of this universe, and he has an impact on it, including defeating such pretty dangerous, scary people like Phosphorus.”
“We’re gonna do great things with him,” Gunn added. “He’s the most popular superhero in the world and I can’t wait for people to see more of him, along with Superman and together.”
Here is the synopsis for Creature Commandos.
“Creature Commandos tracks a secret team of incarcerated monsters recruited for missions deemed too dangerous for humans. When all else fails… they’re your last, worst option.”
Creature Commandos is streaming now on Max.
