The New Mutants movie, titled X-Men: The New Mutants, is the second attempt by 20th Century Fox to expand the Mutant Shared Universe, after the debacle called X-Men Origins: Wolverine. And, even if an official release date hasn't been announced, the studio has already settled on a director - Josh Boone, who directed The Fault in Our Stars.
Two actresses are already rumored to have been cast - Alexandra Shipp as Storm (appearing this year in X-Men: Apocalypse) and Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane (thus far, the Game of Thrones actress hasn’t confirmed or denied this rumor). Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch) is also rumored to have signed on for a role in the movie, most likely as Magik.
However, Josh Boone seems to have confirmed the roster of the New Mutants movie, via his Instagram account, where he posted a couple of pics featuring, well, young mutants: Illyana Rasputin/Magik, Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane, Dani Moonstar/Mirage, Sam Guthrie/Cannonball, Roberto Da Costa/Sunspot, and Warlock.
Even more, the director has also posted a pic featuring these characters, with the simple hashtag New Mutants. So, basically, these are the characters, right?
Well, it isn't that easy. This is the studio’s second attempt to expand the shared universe. However, other movies featuring mutants have also been announced before. For example, Gambit, starring Channing Tatum, was pushed back indefinitely after the budget started bloating out of control. Then there’s the X-Force movie, which seems to be dead in the water at this moment, despite a roster having already been announced.
So where does that leave us?
For the moment, we can only expect that New Mutants will move forward. However, as far as the roster is concerned, the names teased by the director may be just that - teases that won't necessarily become a reality.
What do you think?
Will the New Mutants move forward with these heroes?
