The New Mutants may have failed to deliver at the box office, but it’s now available for everyone to watch from the comfort of home. The Marvel Comics adaptation has now arrived on digital platforms. And, for those who prefer physical media, it is also available on Blu-ray, DVD and 4K Ultra HD.
Directed by Josh Boone, the X-Men spin-off had been in the works for years at Fox. However, creative differences ultimately resulted in the film being shelved. Once the Disney/Fox merger was finalized, Disney allowed Boone to finish what he started. The end result was not received well by critics. It was also released in theaters at a very uncertain time back in August. As a result, it only earned $45 million worldwide.
But now, with the movie available outside of theaters, it may well get its day in court. Either way, it’s significant as it marks the end of the Fox era of the X-Men. While Dark Phoenix was the final proper X-Men movie, this did technically exist in the same universe. Marvel Studios and Disney will now focus on rebooting the mutants within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
