It looks like another big Marvel Cinematic Universe veteran is making the jump to the DC Universe. This time, the Winter Soldier himself Sebastian Stan is said to be in talks for a role in The Batman Part II. After years of waiting, director Matt Reeves is casting up the sequel. Now, Stan appears to be in line for a major part alongside Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne.
According to Variety, Stan is currently in talks for a role in the sequel Details on who he might play are currently being kept under wraps. Stan has long played Buck Barnes/Winter Soldier in the MCU, dating back to Captain America: The First Avenger. He most recently appeared in last year’s Thunderbolts. He’ll be seen later this year in Avengers: Doomsday.
Stan’s casting in a DC movie opens the door for questions about Bucky’s fate in Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars. That’s a conversation for another time though. If his deal goes through, he’ll reunite with Black Widow star Scarlett Johansson. The Oscar-nominee also recently joined the cast of The Batman sequel in an undisclosed role.
Plot details for the sequel largely remain under wraps. Reeves previously said that Batman “goes into places that he couldn’t anticipate in the first one.” The villain has yet to be revealed for the sequel, with speculation now turning to Stan’s character. Could he be the villain? What about Johansson? For now, we have more questions than answers.
“I always wanted the movies to be focused on his character. A lot of the other films, which I love, once you get past the origin tale, then you start telling the rogues’ gallery story and that character’s arc,” Reeves previously said speaking with Josh Horowitz of Happy Sad Confused in September of 2025. “I never wanted to lose Rob at the center of these stories, so that is what we really set our aim on. Picking the right villain that digs into what that does and goes into his past and his life, that was what drove that discussion. We’re super excited about it, and I will say, it’s never really been done in a movie before.”
That begs the question, what Batman villain hasn’t been done in a movie before? It’s easy to see Stan as Harvey Dent, aka Two-Face, but he’s been done several times before. For now, all anyone can do is speculate. The report also notes that Barry Keoghan is also expected to reprise his role as Joker. Since he played Druig in Eternals, that makes it an even bigger Marvel reunion.
The Batman Part II hits theaters on October 1, 2027.
