It looks like another major Nintendo character is headed to the big screen. The Super Mario Galaxy movie is just around the corner. This serves as the sequel to one of the biggest animated movies of all time, 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Now, Mario and Luigi are back to face off against a new threat. But threats might be more accurate, if a new description of the sequel is to be believed.
Warning: potential spoilers for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie ahead. Proceed with caution and beware.
As spotted by Nintendo Wire, the London-based theater chain Everyman Cinema recently revealed a new synopsis for the forthcoming sequel. Neither Universal Pictures, Nintendo, or animation house Illumination have confirmed its legitimacy but if this is the real deal, it means Wario will be in the movie. The description reads as follows.
“After defeating Bowser and saving Brooklyn, Mario faces Wario and Bowser Jr.’s evil alliance. Now, alongside his friends and Yoshi, he must stop their plans for world domination.”
It was previously confirmed that Captain Marvel star Brie Larson will portray Princess Rosalina. Meanwhile, Oppenheimer star Benny Safdie portrays Bowser Jr., seemingly the main villain of the sequel. Mario’s pal Yoshi is also joining the party. However, Universal has been very shy regarding plot details thus far. The official synopsis for the sequel reveals next to nothing about it.
Here is the synopsis for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
“The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is an animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros., and follows The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which was released in 2023 and earned more than $1.3 billion worldwide. Both the 2023 film and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie are produced by Chris Meledandri of Illumination and Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo.”
Wario first appeared in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins in 1996. He’s been a staple of the Mario universe ever since. Including him in the sequel would make a lot of sense. Paramount has been building out the Sonic the Hedgehog universe, including spin-offs. Beyond this movie, Nintendo and Universal likely want to collaborate on a larger universe. Bringing in more key characters is how that’s going to be achieved.
The sequel once again features Mario (Chris Pratt), Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), Luigi (Charlie Day), Bowser (Jack Black), Toad (Keegan-Michael Key) and Kamek (Kevin Michael Richardson). It was directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic.
Elsewhere, Nintendo is also in production on a live-action Legend of Zelda movie. That one is set to hit theaters in 2027. After the first Mario movie made $1.3 billion, it only makes sense that the legendary gaming company would want to dive deeper into the world of Hollywood.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie hits theaters on April 1.
