Roberto Orci, No Longer Directing Star Trek 3

Star Trek 3 was supposed to be Roberto Orci's directorial debut. But that seems to no longer be the case: Orci was let go, though the parting with the franchise is not complete. The Mexico-born writer still remains involved in the project. He continues to keep his producer's chair, resuming the same attributions he had while in charge with the two prequels of Star Trek 3.

Let's keep in mind Orci stepped up to direct Star Trek Into Oblivion as a replacer of JJ Abrams. That happened right immediately after Orci's splitting up with Alex Kurtzman, his colleague with whom he formed one of Hollywood's highest regarded team of screenwriters. Some of their mutual successes count: the Star Trek series itself, Mission: Impossible III and yet another hit series, i.e. Transformers.

The plot: a deal breaker for Roberto Orci

Now, nothing tangible is known about the reason why Roberto Orci was given the boot. We definitely know Roberto Orci was not released because of his lack of experience in directing a movie. The Star Trek series saw in the course of history the directorial debuts of several both Leonard Nimoy and Jonathan Frakes.

Sources, on the other hand, put it down to the script. Badass Digest voices via Devin Faraci that "the script was one of the problem factors". So, what about the script? The plot, which was completed no later than August, remains officially unknown, yet the screenplay was a reason enough to make the change.

Devin Faraci sheds some light on the issue. In his words, "the script Orci was working on saw the Enterprise, the Vulcans and a new alien race competing to get a time travel device. The Vulcans want to go back and stop the destruction of their planet, and the time travel schtick is what would allow Chris Pine and William Shatner to share the screen".

What a development! Well, now that Roberto Orci is out, rumor has it Edgar Wright runs for director of Star Trek 3.

What do you make of that? Do you believe Orci's replacement augurs a new era for the Star Trek series? Have your say and let us know what your take is on the plot as suggested by Devin Faraci's sources!
