Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse Directors Announced

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse - Sony Pictures

After more than a year of very few updates, we finally have a significant one for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. The film is set to conclude the Spider-Verse trilogy, which started with 2018’s Into the Spider-Verse and continued last with Across the Spider-Verse. Sony has officially announced the directors in charge of the project. So, who is in charge of ushering the Miles Morales trilogy to its finale?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson will serve as co-directors of Beyond the Spider-Verse. Persichetti, for starters, was one of the co-directors of Into the Spider-Verse. Peter Ramsey and Rodney Rothman also served as co-directors. As for Thompson, he served as a production designer on Into the Spider-Verse before eventually becoming a co-director of Beyond the Spider-Verse. Joaquim Dos Santos and Kemp Powers also co-directed the sequel. Persichetti and Thompson had this to say about it:

“We have had the immense privilege of being part of Miles’ journey from the very beginning, and directing the conclusion to his story is beyond exciting. The creativity and care poured into every minute of this project has been truly inspiring. We have crafted what we feel is a very satisfying ending, and we can’t wait for fans to experience it – we’re bringing everything we’ve got!”

This is one of Sony’s most-anticipated upcoming films. Both previous Spider-Verse films were not only huge box office hits, but acclaimed ones as well. What’s interesting is that Beyond the Spider-Verse was originally announced with a March 2024 release date. While Sony has not confirmed anything officially, rumors have suggested that the film has been seriously retooled behind the scenes. The fact that the directors have only just been announced speaks to that.

“Bob and Justin’s fingerprints are woven into the DNA of these films, and their passion for Miles’ journey shines through in every frame of his last adventure,” producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller added. “There is nothing more rewarding than collaborating with creative partners with bold vision and brilliant execution like Bob and Justin.  We are thrilled to work with them once again to create a beautiful and satisfying conclusion to this story.”

For what it’s worth, Miller took to Twitter to clarify the news saying, “To anyone confused: Bob and Justin are not the *new* directors, they have been the directors of BTSV the entire time — and doing a great job. They were just announced today.”

Meanwhile, Sony has several other Spider-Man projects in the works. Tom Holland’s Spider-Man 4 is finally coming together, with a 2026 release date on the books. Lord and Miller are also producing a live-action Spider-Man Noir TV show, with Nicolas Cage starring. The studio also recently released Kraven the Hunter. However, the film tanked at the box office and is expected to be Sony’s final attempt (for now) at making a spin-off film based on a Spidey villain.

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse does not currently have a release date.
