Sony’s Future Marvel Movies To Stream On Netflix Worldwide

Sony’s future Marvel movies have established a streaming home for the foreseeable future. Well, all of Sony’s future movies for that matter. Sony previously had a deal in place with Netflix that saw its movies go to the streamer after leaving theaters. Now, the two companies have signed a new mutli-year deal that expands the scope of their partnership globally.

According to Variety, Netflix has exclusive streaming rights to Sony’s movies after they finish their theatrical and home entertainment runs. The new deal doesn’t fully go into effect until 2029 when all of Sony’s prior deals expire, but the deal will start bearing fruit this year. This means that Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be streaming on Netflix later this year after it leaves theaters. Lauren Smith, Netflix’s VP of licensing and programming strategy, had the following to say about it.

“Our members all over the world love movies and giving them exclusive access to Sony’s much loved films adds incredible value to their subscriptions. Sony’s impressive slate of iconic film franchises like ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ and originals like ‘Anyone but You’ have been popular with our U.S. audience and now we’re excited to expand that offering to our members all around the world.”

“This new Pay-1 deal takes that partnership to the next level and reinforces the enduring appeal of our theatrical releases to Netflix’s global audience,” Sony Pictures Television’s executive VP of global distribution Paul Littmann added. “It also further underscores the strength of our independence and unique ability to create meaningful opportunities that benefit our creative stakeholders, consumers, and world-class partners.”

Netflix users in the U.S. have seen movies like Kraven the Hunter and Madame Web on the services. Now though, more subscribers the world over will benefit. The report also notes that Netflix will license certain titles from Sony’s library. Whether or not that includes any other Marvel movies from the past remains to be seen. Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is also due to arrive in 2027, meaning that it will go to Netflix after its run.

As for what else Sony has in the pipeline on the Marvel front? The studio controls the rights to the Spider-Man franchise. That includes more than 900 different Marvel characters. As of right now though, Sony hasn’t announced any further spin-offs following the conclusion of the Venom trilogy. The studio appears to be taking a wait-and-see approach after the likes of Kraven and Madame Web severely underperformed. Characters like Black Cat, Silver Sable and Nightwatch were being eyed for movies at various points.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits theaters on July 31.
