Venom: The Last Dance Is Officially Tom Hardy’s Final Venom Film

Venom: The Last Dance - Sony Pictures

All things must end. This is one of the universal truths. Speaking to that truth, Tom Hardy has confirmed that his time with Venom is just about over. The actor has reaffirmed that Venom: The Last Dance will be his final time playing the role of Eddie Brock. Hardy, known for his roles in The Dark Knight Rises and Mad Max: Fury Road, has been at the center of the franchise since 2018. Whether the series continues after this remains to be seen. If so, it will have to do so without Hardy.

The 47-year-old actor recently confirmed the news on Instagram. The actor is promoting The Last Dance, which hits theaters later this month. The film represents the finale to Hardy’s trilogy and, in all likelihood, the end to this iteration of the franchise. In the caption provided with the above post, Hardy thanked fans for supporting him while verifying that The Last Dance is, well, his last dance. Here’s what he had to say about it:

“Thankyou for a great time – and 7 years. I’ve had the best experience @Sony working with Venom – this is me and the big guy last outing going out with a Bang!!! Come see us off – last in the trilogy and done we have had such a great time Thankyou.”

If Hardy is going out, he’s going out with a big bang. Venom: The Last Dance features Knull as the villain, setting up by far the biggest villain in Sony’s Marvel universe to date. Whether or not that has ramifications beyond this single film remains to be seen. There’s always the possibility that Knull becomes the Thanos of Sony’s Marvel films, so to speak. If nothing else, Sony seemed to save the best – or at least biggest – for last.

Here is the synopsis for Venom: The Last Dance.

“In Venom: The Last Dance, Tom Hardy returns as Venom, one of Marvel’s greatest and most complex characters, for the final film in the trilogy. Eddie and Venom are on the run. Hunted by both of their worlds and with the net closing in, the duo are forced into a devastating decision that will bring the curtains down on Venom and Eddie’s last dance.”

The cast also includes Chiwetel Ejiofor, Juno Temple, Rhys Ifans, Peggy Lu, Alanna Ubach and Stephen Graham. The film is directed by Kelly Marcel from a screenplay she wrote alongside Hardy. Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, Amy Pascal, Marcel, Hardy and Hutch Parker are on board as producers.

Sony, meanwhile, is trying to figure out what to do next. They control the entire Spider-Man franchise, but most of this is not directly connected to the main Marvel Cinematic Universe. Spider-Man 4 starring Tom Holland is currently in the works. Beyond that, it’s tough to know. Madame Web isn’t getting a sequel. Morbius isn’t getting a sequel. We’ll have to see what happens with Kraven the Hunter later this year. After that? It’s up the air. Hardy leaving makes things even more complicated.

Venom: The Last Dance hits theaters on October 25.
