Earlier this year, it was revealed that Jason Bourne star Alicia Vikander would replace Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft in the Warner Bros., MGM, and GK Films reboot of Tomb Raider. While the movie has been scheduled for a March 18, 2018 release, it’s been months since we’ve heard about any major developments. But now, we finally have some news!
The man Vikander's young and untested Lara Croft will confront in the Tomb Raider reboot has been found. According to Variety and a number of other outlets, The Hateful Eight star Walton Goggins is in final negotiations to portray the villain in the Roar Uthaug flick. The character’s name and description will be announced later.
Goggins has appeared in numerous movies, including Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight and Django Unchained, Jon M. Chu's G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Steven Spielberg's Lincoln, Nimród Antal's Predators, and Nima Nourizadeh's American Ultra. He has also had major roles in the FX shows The Shield and Justified, as well as HBO's Vice Principals. Finally, he is playing the lead character in History's upcoming series Six.
Walton Goggins is just the second name to be added to the Tomb Raider reboot's cast roster. But since the movie is around fifteen months away from hitting the theaters, production should commence by spring 2017. So we can expect the addition of more cast members in the coming months.
Neither of the previous Tomb Raider movies with Angelina Jolie impressed the critics. However, the first, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, still holds the top spot on the list of highest grossing video game adaptations in North America and the fifth spot on the worldwide list. We hope that the upcoming reboot will beat the previous movies by miles in terms of both critical and box office performance.
