While the 1999 remake starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz was a great start to a franchise – a perfect mix of action, comedy, and scares - The Mummy wasn't exactly one of the best movies of the year. Even more, it can be considered an obsolete product, especially in this age of the shared universes - if there are plans for even a Fast and Furious shared universe, why wouldn't there be one for all of the iconic Universal monsters?
The Mummy reboot, starring Tom Cruise, Sofia Boutella (as the titular character), and Russell Crowe (as Dr. Henry Jekyll) is the beginning of this shared universe. And, as you can see below, the movie aims to be something completely different from the 1999 version and more in the vein of the 1932 original.
Since the movie’s release is planned for June 2017, it makes sense for the studio to kick-start the marketing campaign with a first trailer during December. There are quite a few big movies being released this month, and Universal could benefit if the trailer is previewed in front of, say, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. So, without further ado, check out the trailer sneak peek for The Mummy!
Of course, the question right now is how much Tom Cruise will run in this movie. But, without jesting, we could ask ourselves what powers this Mummy has, how big Russell Crowe's role is (we suspect it’s only a cameo, which will help build the shared universe), or even how the Mummy will become a dark antihero (like, say, Luke Evans' Dracula).
We assume that we'll find out more about these questions, and the movie in general, on Sunday, when the full trailer hits. As far as we’re concerned, it looks like this will be one of the big hits of 2017.
