The MCU’s X-Men Movie Reboot Has Found Its Writer

At long last, we are one step closer to a new X-Men movie. While it’s still in the early days, the long-awaited reboot of the franchise has taken a major step forward. Michael Lesslie (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes) has signed on to write the film for Marvel Studios. The news comes to us via Deadline, with the outlet noting that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige will be producing the project. For the time being, that’s about all we know.

Plot details are being kept totally under wraps. There’s also no word on casting or who might wind up in the director’s chair. The film also doesn’t have a release date. That means it probably won’t arrive until late 2027 at the earliest after Avengers: Secret Wars hits theaters. The announcement comes just as X-Men ‘97 wrapped up its first very successful season on Disney+. That success, it seems, has prompted Marvel to get the gears moving on a new film. Lesslie, aside from writing the recent Hunger Games prequel, also wrote 2016’s Assassin’s Creed movie. He also wrote Now You See Me 3, which is currently in production.

Aside from the success of X-Men ‘97, the mutants have been a bigger focus at Marvel as of late. The future of the X-Men comics was revealed earlier this year, with several new books hitting shelves throughout 2024 and beyond. Feige, for his part, has been very tight-lipped about the X-Men up to this point. He did, however, speak broadly about it in an interview with Entertainment Weekly in 2023.

“Part of the fun is that I’ve been at this company for half my life, and we’re just now tapping into arguably one of the biggest aspects of the publishing history. It’s pretty remarkable, and it’s a testament to the house of ideas and what Marvel publishing has done these 80 years. The question is how to do it and when to do it, and that’s something we’ve been working on for years. Now we know. But we’re not going to talk about it.”

Meanwhile, Deadpool & Wolverine will hit theaters this summer, bringing mutants to the big screen in the MCU for the first time in a meaningful way. That movie will see Ryan Reynolds returning as Deadpool, with Hugh Jackman coming out of retirement to play Wolverine once more. Whether or not either of them returns in this eventual X-Men reboot remains to be seen.

The new X-Men movie does not currently have a release date.
