Spider-Man: No Way Home is officially one of the biggest movies of all time. With the most recent weekend at the box office in the books, the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe film has now earned $1.69 billion globally according to Box Office Mojo. That makes it the sixth highest-grossing film in history, currently sitting behind Avengers: Infinity War, which earned $2 billion in 2018.
In its sixth week of release, director Jon Watts’ film took in another $14 million domestically, bringing its total to $720.8 million in North America. It is now number four all-time domestic behind only Avatar, Avengers: Endgame and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Overall, it passed Jurassic World ($1.67 billion) and The Lion King ($1.66 billion) over the weekend. This all bodes well for how much it will make on VOD and Blu-ray.
Here is the synopsis for Spider-Man: No Way Home.
“For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero’s identity is revealed, bringing his Super Hero responsibilities into conflict with his normal life and putting those he cares about most at risk. When he enlists Doctor Strange’s help to restore his secret, the spell tears a hole in their world, releasing the most powerful villains who’ve ever fought a Spider-Man in any universe. Now, Peter will have to overcome his greatest challenge yet, which will not only forever alter his own future but the future of the Multiverse.”
Few movies have ever managed to generate so much buzz on a global scale. This would be impressive under any circumstances. But the fact that No Way Home has accomplished this during the pandemic is truly staggering. No other movie has even come close to making $1 billion in the COVID era, let alone closer to $2 billion. It speaks volumes about the popularity of Spider-Man and the love for Tom Holland’s iteration of the character. It seems very likely this won’t be the end of the road for Holland’s Peter Parker after all.
The cast also includes Zendaya, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jacob Batalon, Jon Favreau, Marisa Tomei, Jamie Foxx, Willem Dafoe and Alfred Molina. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal produced the film, with Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, JoAnn Perritano, Rachel O’Connor, Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach serving as executive producers. Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers penned the screenplay.
