Spawn: Todd McFarlane Had DiCaprio in Mind for Twitch

Although it seemed impossible, Todd McFarlane actually persuaded a studio to accept his terms for his Spawn reboot. He'll write and direct the movie for Blumhouse, a studio that focuses mainly on low-budget horror films, while also making waves with flicks like Whiplash.

When the announcement was made at this year's San Diego Comic Con, it was quite a surprise. But it wasn’t as surprising as Todd McFarlane's more recent announcement. The writer/director implied that Spawn would indeed be the film’s main character, but his story will be told from the point of view of Twitch, a cop who’s appeared in the Spawn comics since the first issue.

McFarlane compared Twitch to Chief Brody in Steven Spielberg's Jaws, which certainly puts a twist on the reboot. It does explain to a certain degree why Blumhouse accepted McFarlane's conditions (hint: it has something to do with a low budget).

During an interview with Vulture, McFarlane made another Twitch-related reveal. The character is inspired by Leonardo DiCaprio's character in Wolf of Wall Street:

When I was writing, I had Leonardo DiCaprio in my head. I don't know if people have seen The Wolf of Wall Street, but there is a manicness in him. He was going up and down and up and down. It was almost dizzying emotionally to go with him. There are parts in this movie where I'm going to need an actor to make those moves both in terms of normality, and in terms of manic, and in terms of anger, and in terms of joy, and be able to go to some extremes in it.

So far, we know that the story of Spawn will be told from the perspective of another character, and that its creator was influenced by both Jaws and Wolf of Wall Street. And you have to agree, this is quite an interesting combination.

We’re sure that additional details, such as casting news or a release date, will be revealed in the near future.
