Weekend Box Office: Logan Surpasses All Expectations

The X-Men franchise may not be a huge favorite among comic book movie fans, but it kick-started the modern age of superhero films back in 2000. Directed by Bryan Singer, it isn’t exactly the biggest superhero franchise at the box office, either, although Deadpool is the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time.

And maybe Fox should focus on R-rated comic book movies, especially now that Logan is yet another R-rated hit. It was estimated that the movie would bring in $60 million in the US, but it managed to surpass everyone’s expectations by earning $88.3 million during its opening weekend.

Sure, this amount pales when compared to Deadpool's debut weekend. But it’s still a record breaker, and Logan is the highest grossing R-rated flick to be released in March.

Logan (Fox Movies)

In combination with revenues from other markets, Logan’s opening weekend is the fourth highest grossing R-rated movie debut of all time. On a budget of around $100 million (without marketing costs, of course), Hugh Jackman's last Wolverine flick made an impressive $240.8 million.

As we mentioned earlier, maybe Fox should focus on the X-Men’s smaller, more personal stories and make some more R-rated films. After two hits like these, one can only wonder, right?

However, Logan's reign at the US box office may be short-lived, since Kong: Skull Island will be released this weekend. Even if the critics don’t love the monster movie as much as they do Logan, it will still make big bucks.

Hugh Jackman thanked his fans for supporting him since he became the Wolverine, and we thank him for Logan:
