Gambit was supposed to be the third X-Men flick of 2016, but a bloated budget and the departure of the directors pushed it back to 2017, only to have it delayed until an unspecified date in the end. At this point, even if some say otherwise, the project seems to be dead in the water.
The most recent news concerns director Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow), who was assigned to helm the movie. Reportedly, the director was supposed to kick-start the production of Gambit this fall, but this may not happen, since Liman is close to signing a deal for another movie that’s supposed to start production this year.
Thus, The Hollywood Reporter says that the (still) Gambit director is currently negotiating with Lionsgate and Summit Entertainment to helm the young-adult sci-fi thriller Chaos Walking, based on the best-selling trilogy of the same name written by Patrick Ness. Most importantly, Charlie Kaufman (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) is writing the script.
So, in a way, Liman is supposed to choose between Gambit (which has already suffered numerous delays, and is an uncertain project) and a project that has every chance of being successful, like many others of its kind. Is this a hard decision to make? No, it actually isn't.
To be noted, in 2017, Doug Liman will also release Mena, a crime-thriller starring Tom Cruise. Looking forward to it!
So maybe those other rumors are true, and maybe Channing Tatum has already jumped into the DCEU, in a still unspecified role (which we hope is Shazam). Very few fans believed that Gambit would work, and even fewer saw Channing Tatum as the Ragin' Cajun. So maybe there is good news here, somewhere.
