Even if the last Dredd movie (2012) was a critical success, it didn't manage to attract enough audiences to justify a sequel. The Karl Urban action/sci-fi flick gathered just $35 million worldwide on a budget of $50 million, despite being 78% certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. How did that happen? It's easy - the marketing campaign was almost non-existent.
The movie has its followers, and was in high demand the first week it was released (more than 750 thousand units sold). So it isn't a wonder that, time and time again, rumors are being heard on the web about a follow-up. Unfortunately, these are just rumors. Karl Urban has most recently stated that the discussions for Dredd 2 died even before they began.
Since 2012, the actor has spearheaded the movement to get a sequel greenlighted a couple of times, but to no avail. So maybe the approach should change. Maybe Dredd shouldn't be released for the big screen, but rather for the small screen.
And Netflix is the best medium for dark and violent shows. As such, a Dredd opening sequence for a Netflix show has surfaced on the web. It has some sequences from the beginning of the movie, the credits list the main stars, and it features some police radio banter.
Check it out below:
Since Dredd can be considered a post-apocalyptic Punisher, there’s no chance that Netflix will pick this one up. But still, this shows the interest of the fans in this character.
The 2012 film was ages away from the Stallone movie of 1995. While it was a sci-fi flick, it was still relatable, and it didn't go too far with the futuristic gadgets. The fact that it had a straightforward plot (resembling the one of The Raid: Redemption) also helped.
