DC’s Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow Movie Has Found Its Director

DC’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow movie has found its director. Warner Bros. first announced the film last year as part of the new DC Universe slate being headed up by Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn and producer Peter Safran. Now, Deadline has revealed that Craig Gillespie (Cruella) is in talks to direct the project for the studio. If all goes well, the plan is to begin production before the end of 2024.

Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) was recently cast as our new Supergirl. Ana Nogueira penned the screenplay for Woman of Tomorrow, which is based on Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s 2022 comic book of the same name. Nogueira is also currently writing a live-action Teen Titans movie for the studio. As for Gillespie, he most recently directed Dumb Money. Some of his other credits include I, Tonya and the Fright Night remake.

Here is the synopsis for the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic.

“Kara Zor-El has seen some epic adventures over the years, but finds her life without meaning or purpose. Here she is, a young woman who saw her planet destroyed and was sent to Earth to protect a baby cousin who ended up not needing her. What was it all for? Wherever she goes, people only see her through the lens of Superman’s fame. Just when Supergirl thinks she’s had enough, everything changes. An alien girl seeks her out for a vicious mission. Her world has been destroyed, and the bad guys responsible are still out there. She wants revenge, and if Supergirl doesn’t help her, she’ll do it herself, whatever the cost. Now a Kryptonian, a dog, and an angry, heartbroken child head out into space on a journey that will shake them to their very core.”

Gunn is currently filming his new Superman movie, which will kick off the new DCU next summer. The plan is to film Supergirl after that production wraps up. Gunn is also going to be very busy as Peacemaker season 2 is due to film after he’s done with Superman.

“We see the difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl,” Gunn and Safran said of the film during a press event last year. “She’s much more hardcore; she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”

The new DCU slate also includes movies such as Swamp Thing, Batman: The Brave and the Bold and The Authority. Several shows are also in the works including Waller, Booster Gold, Creature Commandos, Lanterns and Paradise Lost. The first chapter of the new DC Universe has been dubbed Gods and Monsters by Gunn and Safran. It will be a full reboot that will abandon the DCEU, aka the Snyderverse.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow does not currently have a release date.
