Sony held the rights to one of the most popular superheroes ever, but the studio wasn’t able to make bankable movies about the character. The first Spider-Man trilogy did make a splash at the box office, but the second one died during the first installment, mainly because the same studio interfered in the creative process.
Of course, Sony wants to create a shared universe as well. And they’ve chosen another comic book character for that. The news of a planned shared universe based on Bloodshot emerged at the same time as the news about Spider-Man joining the MCU. The plan was to release the first Bloodshot movie sometime in 2017. But here we are in 2017, and there’s still no word about a release date.
However, screenwriter Eric Heisserer (Arrival) said that the project is still moving forward, and added that Sony has found a new director (via Bleeding Cool). Previously, the studio had been in talks with David Leitch and Chad Stahelski (John Wick) to helm the flick, but they’ve since dropped out.
Now, Sony has attached visual effects creative supervisor Dave Wilson (Avengers: Age of Ultron) to direct Bloodshot. This will be his first directorial effort. Will it work? It might.
Bloodshot isn’t known as a general audience-friendly superhero, so it can be said that the creative team has a certain amount of freedom. Given the fact that Bloodshot is an ultimate-soldier type of character, maybe Sony will set a smaller budget and make an R-rated movie.
For the moment, Bloodshot doesn't have a release date. Maybe Sony will speed up production, now that they have a director.
