The next Avengers movie has found its director. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty will be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. The filmmaker worked with Marvel Studios recently, sitting in the director’s chair for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. That relationship clearly went well as Cretton has now been handed the keys to the biggest franchise in all of cinema.
Avengers: The Kang Dynasty was announced during this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige took the stage at Hall H to lay out plans for Phase 5 and Phase 6 of the MCU. Phase 4 will come to an end with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever later this year. Phase 6, it was revealed, will conclude with two massive events. The Kang Dynasty will come first, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars, both of which are due to hit theaters in 2025. No director for Secret Wars has been announced yet.
No casting has been revealed for The Kang Dynasty yet. One thing we do know is that Jonathan Majors will be playing Kang the Conqueror. He first appeared as the character at the end of Loki season 1. He is also set to reprise the role in next year’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
The Multiverse Saga
Another key piece of information that was revealed is that Phase 4 through Phase 6 now have a name. The Multiverse Saga is what Marvel is calling this period of the MCU. The first three phases were known as The Infinity Saga, given Thanos and his quest for the Infinity Stones. The multiverse has been an increasingly larger part of the MCU as of late. Shows like WandaVison and Loki laid some groundwork in that department. However, movies like Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness kicked the door wide open. It seems we are going to explore this concept a whole lot more over the next few years.

Cretton is behind one of the biggest success stories of Phase 4. Despite the pandemic still being a concert, Shang-Chi became a big hit taking in $432 million at the global box office. A sequel is also in development. In the wake of the success, Cretton signed a deal with Disney that will see him heading up several Marvel projects. We also recently learned that he is working on a Wonder Man series for Disney+. One big question now is who will direct Shang-Chi 2. Cretton will clearly have his hands full with the next Avengers movie, and the Shang-Chi sequel is presumably going to be part of Phase 6 as well.
Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is set to hit theaters on May 2, 2025.
