The first Tomb Raider movie was a box office success that performed poorly among the critics. The second one, on the other hand, wasn't slammed that brutally by the critics, but it also didn't earn that much money. But one thing that those two movies definitely did was to establish Angelina Jolie as a leading actress in Hollywood.
Jolie's days as Lara Croft are long gone, and we are looking forward to Alicia Vikander's take on the character in the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot. With her performances in movies like Ex Machina and The Danish Girl, the Swedish actress has already made herself a household name in Hollywood. So, we can't but eagerly anticipate the movie's arrival on March 16, 2018.
In a recent phone interview with Hitfix, Alicia finally addresses landing the Lara Croft role in the Roar Uthaug flick. She reconfirms that the Tomb Raider reboot will indeed be based on the 2013 video game, and adds:
That (the 2013 video game) is more of an origin story. You get into an emotional aspect of getting to know Lara, hopefully in an in-depth way. So I hope that doing a film of the rebooted game will bring something new and fresh that'll stand on its own two legs.
The Academy Award winning actress also admits that she played the Tomb Raider game back when she was a kid:
I, with the rest of the world, was excited to see a female protagonist in a video game. I was a bit scared playing it when I was twelve, thirteen. I had to go take little breaks.
During the interview, Vikander also reveals that she was offered a part in another video game-based big screen adaptation, Assassin's Creed, which rolls into theaters this December 21. But rejecting that role has nothing to do with the Tomb Raider reboot.
She had to pass on it since its production schedule conflicted with that of Jason Bourne, in which she’ll appear as Agent Heather Lee. According to the actress, being a "huge fan" of the Bourne franchise made the July 29, 2016 release "the clear choice" for her. They also approached her first.
