Is Marvel Making A Groot Movie? Here’s What We Know

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (Groot) - Marvel Studios

It sounds like Marvel Studios might be interested in making a Groot movie. Or, at the very least, Vin Diesel wants Marvel to want to make a Groot solo movie. The actor who voices the fan-favorite talking alien tree in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise has hinted at a possible project in the works within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Is this just talk? Or is there actually something going on?

Diesel, who is getting ready to make Fast & Furious 11, recently took to Instagram to offer a big update on several other projects. You can check out the full post below, but he touches on everything from a new Last Witch Hunter movie to a Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots adaptation. In and amongst all of this chatter was a tease of a Groot project.

“Disney wants their Planet X! Which some say is Marvel’s most anticipated movie, haha. The film where Groot returns to his home planet.”

Marvel Studios has not announced anything official on this front. Groot is rather popular though and with James Gunn now focused on DC Studios, the studio needs to find a way to move forward. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4 is unlikely to happen. If it does, it will be with an entirely different team. So, in some ways, a Groot solo project would make some sense.

The future of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise remains somewhat in flux right now. 2023’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 essentially disbanded the team as we knew it. Zoe Saldana has retired as Gamora. Dave Bautista has moved on from Drax. We know Chris Pratt is set to return as Star-Lord at some point, most likely in Avengers: Doomsday and/or Avengers: Secret Wars. But what about Groot? That’s the big question mark.

“I think if it’s up to James Gunn, you are going to see a Groot and Rocket movie after Infinity War. I think that’s highly possible. We shall see,” Diesel previously said in the lead up to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. That never materialized, but the future of the MCU largely remains undetermined beyond 2027.

As of right now, the only announced movies with release dates aside from Avengers: Doomsday and Secret wars are Thunderbolts* and Fantastic Four: First Steps. Secret Wars will conclude the Multiverse Saga. After that, we expect to see a new X-Men movie, as well as Doctor Strange 3 and Shang-Chi 2. If Diesel is to be believed, a Groot solo movie will be in the mix as well. Diesel was at one point gunning to play Black Bolt in the Inhumans movie, which never came to pass. It appears he’s still itching to take the spotlight in the MCU, given the chance.

Thunderbolts* hits theaters on May 2.
