Chris Evans may be determined to leave the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Avengers 4, but there’s another Chris who wouldn’t mind carrying on as one of Earth's Mightiest Heroes.
Not counting the cameo in the Doctor Strange mid-credits scene, Chris Hemsworth has played Thor in five movies, and he’ll be back for Avengers: Infinity War and its untitled sequel. At that point, his contract with Marvel Studios will end. It’s been teased that the clash with Thanos will result in some major casualties, so it's hard to be optimistic about his future in the MCU. However, we can find some solace in the knowledge that Hemsworth would like to keep his job.
The Aussie actor told IGN that, like Evans, he wasn't completely comfortable with his commitment to the MCU. His change of heart came after he worked on the God of Thunder’s third solo movie with Taika Waititi, along with the latest installment with the Russo Brothers’ latest effort:
I've just – literally, two days ago – finished Avengers 4, and that's my contract. My pre-existing contract is done now, so it's kind of like, “Wow, that's it.” Two or three films ago, I was like, “Okay, a couple more.” I was enjoying it, but I was like…I felt a little restricted. And after this last experience with Taika – and actually, these last two Avengers – I feel like we've reinvented the character a number of times. Even in these next two, he evolves again, and you don't get that opportunity often in a franchise. So I definitely feel a renewed sense of excitement and enthusiasm, and more so than ever, I think.
Waititi recently commented that he’d like to do a follow-up to Thor: Ragnarok, but Hemsworth claims that he’s heard nothing about it. He suggested that the current focus was on Infinity War and Avengers 4. It’s fairly clear that he’s open to the idea of renewing his contract with Marvel:
If I had the opportunity to do it again, I think I'd love to. I also think there's an appetite for it now, or there's a far greater range of possibilities of where he can go now, what he can do, just because we've kind of broken the mold a bit.
