The latter doesn't seem too probable, since the first Avengers roster has already changed, with the addition of new superheroes, with more following during the Phase III (Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man). So, with Thor being almost immortal (we know how this sounds, but bear with us), what will happen with him?

As said, he isn't exactly a god, nor a demigod (as we are used to believing). His father, Odin, said that repeatedly. And while they do live more, much more than a human being, they can still get old and they can still die.
And this usually happens in battle "“ as it happened with Odin's father, as it happened to Odin himself (as we want to believe). So what if Thor actually dies in the end, thus putting an end to what is, until now, the weakest solo franchise in the MCU?
Ragnarok will come and will, most likely, see the destruction of Asgard. An angered Thor might just do something stupid during the Infinity War and get himself killed. But this isn't a too satisfying solution for this character, even if a big death will be more than welcomed in the MCU at that moment.
