Spider-Man: Homecoming will hit theaters in less than a week, and it’s hard to resist checking out all of the details that those who’ve already seen it have spilled online. We’re talking about the critics, who all loved the movie, which is currently sitting at 93 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. They almost unanimously agreed that it’s the best Spider-Man movie ever.
Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Jacob Balaton, and Zendaya all nailed their roles. Would you like to learn more about a recently revealed character? Read on, but there are spoilers here!
Previous movies featured Mary Jane Watson and Gwen Stacy as the Peter Parker’s romantic interests, and it seemed that they wouldn’t appear in Homecoming. This led to numerous rumors that speculated that Zendaya’s character was Mary Jane, rather than Michelle.
It turned out that Zendaya’s character is Michelle and she isn't even close to Peter throughout most of the movie, although they become friends toward the end. Here’s where the twist comes in, if we can call it that. And no, we're not talking about the daughter of the Vulture thing"¦
Michelle says that her friends call her MJ, which is obviously a nod to Mary Jane Watson. We don't know what to make of this, simply because it seems to be a useless name change if she’s supposed to be an adapted version of Mary Jane.
Furthermore, we feel that this won't be followed up in the sequels, since it seems to be aimed specifically at those who thought that Michelle was Mary Jane. If that’s the case, it’s no fun at all.
As if that weren't enough, if Michelle remains MJ throughout the Spider-Man solo franchise, we can be certain that Mary Jane Watson won't be introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
But what do you think? What do you make of this reveal?
