Sony Pictures has been planning to sculpt a complete Spider-Man universe for years, and now it looks as though they’re closer to making it happen. They recently announced a release date for a Venom movie, and a new report suggests that a female-led Spider-Man spin-off is in development.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the project will focus on Felicia Hardy, aka the Black Cat, and Silver Sablinova, aka Silver Sable. Although an earlier report suggested that Abi Morgan (The Invisible Woman) was in talks to pen the script for a Silver Sable movie, the new report asserts that Sony has hired Chris Yost (Thor: Ragnarok) for the job.
Yost, screenwriter for Thor: The Dark World and head writer for the animated series The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, is currently revamping a draft of the script written by Westworld co-creator Lisa Joy.
The Black Cat/Silver Sable movie still lacks a release date, but the studio is leaning toward starting production this fall, and they’re hoping to start searching for a director soon. Matt Tolmach and Amy Pascal will produce.
Borys Kit, the THR correspondent who broke the story, later tweeted that neither movie will be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige is not involved in any capacity. Check out his tweet below!

Black Cat was created by Marv Wolfman and Keith Pollard in 1979’s The Amazing Spider-Man #194. Silver Sable made her Marvel Comics debut in 1985’s The Amazing Spider-Man #265. Both have surfaced as allies of the web-slinger, but while Felicia (Felicity Jones) appeared in Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Silver has yet to make her live-action cinematic debut.
