Back when Sony's Amazing Spider-Man franchise seemed to be lifting off, the studio planned to make a shared universe focused solely on the web-crawler. Thus, besides the Sinister Six movie, the Venom spin-off, and the Spider-Man flicks, some other projects were also being planned. One of them was going to feature Aunt May, who was supposed to be a secret agent who hid her past from everybody.
If you thought that it was a bad idea, you’re not the only one. Thankfully, Sony realized that the Amazing Spider-Man franchise had no future and a deal with Marvel was made.
But does that mean that Sony has completely dropped its plans for the web-slinger? Not at all. During an interview with Collider, Sony Pictures boss Tom Rothman teased these plans. Obviously, he didn't reveal anything specific. However, he did say that an announcement will be made sooner rather than later:
We’re working on lots of that stuff and there’s a concerted effort now. I think there will be real news, opposed to speculative news, before too long.
Of course, the biggest question right now doesn't concern what kinds of projects are being planned. Instead, given the track record Sony had with the second Spider-Man franchise, the question is about the Marvel collaboration. So will Sony make these spin-offs with Marvel? Or will it go it alone, as it did before?
We guess it is safe to say that most of the fans would be eager to see a second shared universe being born within the MCU rather than the alternative. But we will have to wait to see the route these projects will go.
