Around three months ago, a rumor surfaced on the web that suggested that we will know Zendaya's character as Michelle throughout Spider-Man: Homecoming, but it will be revealed toward the movie’s end that she is none other than the iconic Spidey love-interest Mary Jane Watson. The rumor seemed so believable that it faced major Internet backlash, and guys like Marvel Comics legend Stan Lee and Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn had to come forward to defend the apparent casting decision!
In an interview earlier this month, Zendaya avoided revealing whether she is portraying Mary Jane in Spider-Man: Homecoming or not, but she did claim that her character is not a love-interest for Peter Parker. Also, the way she described her character doesn't really fit the iconic one played by Kirsten Dunst in Sam Raimi's webslinger movies.
But now, Zendaya has left us with no doubt, as she makes it clear in an interview with Entertainment Tonight that she isn't playing Mary Jane in the Jon Watts venture. She says, "I'm not Mary Jane, unfortunately, but I am in the movie, which is exciting." When the interviewer asks, "Wait, you are not Mary Jane," the 20-year-old actress denies it with a straightforward "NO, my character's name is Michelle."
Many might not be convinced, still wanting to believe that Zendaya is just trying to safeguard a big Spider-Man: Homecoming secret. But it seems highly unlikely that a star would lie to the press when she could have simply kept her mouth shut.
During the interview, Zendaya also talks about how she feels about being a part of the July 7, 2017 release:
It's incredible, you know? It's such a huge project to be part of. I mean, who could pick a better thing to be your first movie? Like, I'm speechless. If I could pick a movie, it would be Spider-Man, so I got it.
