Spider-Man's destiny is at a crossroads. The intensely discussed "Sony hack" has made history since early October until now. It's not the gravity of the attack, as much as the leaked info that made the comic book movie aficionados go on the rampage. One of the most sensitive matters under debate regards the future of the Spider-Man slate.
Sony and Marvel have apparently come to a standstill. Their dialogue initially aimed at bringing Spider-Man back to the Marvel Universe under a certain "creative control" from Sony. But Sony's higher-ups seem to now envisage a different development altogether for the webslinger. We don't know it, clearly they don't know it either. What is certain is they no longer fancy the Marvel plan.
What Marvel wants for Spider-Man
Captain America: Civil War is due to arrive in theaters May 6th, 2016. Marvel would have wanted to work out a cameo appearance of Spider-Man in the plot. That would have laid the grounds for a future wider collaboration with Sony, the prospect of a new trilogy arising on the horizon. But Sony shrugged off the tie-in topic. And time is clearly running out. Yeah, they do plan for a different development of the franchise. Apparently, Spider-Man disclosing his real identity in Captain America: Civil War didn't match Sony's plans
How Sony sees the future of Spider-Man
Here is what Amy Pascal asks: "Need script approval, casting approval of [Spider-Man] and Aunt May and consultation of May’s house in Queens and any other spiderman locations we may need in future movies. Also approval of new Spiderman costume…How long is he in the movie? How closely does it follow the Civil War story line? does the world find out who Spiderman is? are there any other characters from the Spiderman universe they are using? Can we use one of the Marvel characters in our future Spiderman movies not produced by marvel? Can we use Cap to set up [Sinister Six]? can [director Drew Goddard] work with the Russos to get this done? Are we renting him out?".
All these questions are, in fact, difficulties Sony doesn't want to face. They would have traded Spider-Man if Captain America: Civil War had set up The Sinister Six. Plus, Sony assumes Marvel would then feel entitled to reclaim any of the other characters of the Spider-Man slate. But the clock is ticking on The Sinister Six too. The spinoff comes to theaters November 11th, 2016. Hopefully, the Spidey summit in January will clear the air and a decision - the right one - will be made.
