We learned a couple of months ago that Sony Pictures was developing a female superhero movie about Marvel Comics characters Black Cat and Silver Sable, both of whom are connected with Spider-Man. Now, we know that, like Wonder Woman, this project will have a female director.
Multiple outlets have confirmed that the studio hired Gina Prince-Bythewood to direct the Black Cat/Silver Sable movie. Prince-Bythewood, whose previous efforts included Beyond the Lights, The Secret Life of Bees, and Love and Basketball, recently worked on Marvel Television’s pilot episode of their upcoming Freeform series Cloak and Dagger.
Variety suggested that the filmmaker would also rewrite the Black Cat/Silver Sable movie script, which was originally penned by Chris Yost (Thor: The Dark World, Thor: Ragnarok). Lisa Joy, who created HBO's Westworld with Jonathan Nolan, wrote an early draft.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony has decided to title the movie Silver and Black.
Unlike the studio's other Spider-Man offshoot Venom - which recently found its director in Ruben Fleischer and its lead actor in Tom Hardy – Silver and Black doesn't have a release date yet. THR agreed with the previous report saying that Sony wants to get the cameras rolling by this fall.
We might assume that the studio has its eye on an early 2019 release for the female-driven movie. It also seems safe to assume that announcements about who will play Felicia Hardy and Silver Sablinova might be made in the next few weeks.
