Paul Rudd's Scott Lang and Evangeline Lily's Hope van Dyne are the lead superheroes in Ant-Man and the Wasp, but they may not be the only superheroes to appear in the movie. A new online rumor has surfaced that Jeremy Renner's Clint Barton, aka Hawkeye, will team up with them in the upcoming Peyton Reed sequel.
We already knew that Renner would be busy shooting Avengers: Infinity War and its untitled sequel back-to-back. But according to Roger Friedman from Showbiz 411, the 46-year-old actor is also going to join Ant-Man and the Wasp, which kicks off production this July at Pinewood Atlanta Studios.
Since Renner is occupied with these Marvel Cinematic Universe installments, he won't be able to return as William Brandt in Mission: Impossible 6, which is expected to begin filming within the next couple of months. It must be noted that when the official cast roster for the Christopher McQuarrie flick – including returning members and new additions – was announced during Paramount Pictures' recent presentation at CinemaCon, Renner's name didn't come up. Friedman speculated that they've brought in Henry Cavill to play a character who would replace Brandt.
Marvel superheroes don't stand alone, even in their standalone movies, so Hawkeye's appearance in Ant-Man and the Wasp doesn't seem improbable. In Captain America: Civil War, Barton brought Lang to Steve Rogers, and the two then provided us with a memorable sequence during the airport battle. Later, they were both held captive in the Raft until Rogers broke them out.
If the rumor is true, Jeremy Renner would join a cast roster that includes Rudd, Lily, Michael Douglas, and Michael Pena. Earlier this month, Pena told Collider that he hadn't been contacted about the July 6, 2018 release, but he later told LRM that he would indeed appear in the movie.
UPDATE: Peyton Reed has debunked the rumor via his official Twitter account. Check out his tweet below!
