We’re less than a month away from the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, a sequel that will expand the titular team of anti-heroes. The movie will also introduce new characters portrayed by Hollywood A-listers, including Kurt Russell and Sylvester Stallone, who teamed up in 1989 buddy cop movie Tango & Cash. Russell is playing Star-Lord's dad, Ego the Living Planet. The identity of Stallone's character hasn't been officially confirmed, but a recent rumor suggests that it's Starhawk.
Since we learned that the two veteran actors would appear in the May 5, 2017 release, we’ve been wondering whether they will share the screen once again. Sad, but true, Russell told Total Film that a reunion won’t happen in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (via Comic Book):
Well…no, there’s nothing there. But what was fun was, when I learned that Sly was going to play a part, it was fun to just be able to feel that we were in the same movie.
This obviously won't break your heart if it was already broken when Kurt Russell turned down Sylvester Stallone's offer to join The Expendables film series. Stallone recently pulled out of The Expendables 4, so there's no longer any hope of seeing the two together in that franchise. You might find solace in the fact that Tango and Cash did have a behind-the-scenes reunion on the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 set. According to Russell:
I saw Sly two or three times during the making of the movie and after. It was great to be able to once again hang with Sly. He’s a really huge person. His demeanor, everything about him. He always puts a smile on my face, and we share lots of laughs. I find him to be very smart and very funny – and alive…He’s a great hang. This was just fun, being in the same sandbox. It was nice to have that connection again.
Director James Gunn has already revealed that Marvel Studios intends to use Russell and Stallone's characters in future Marvel Cinematic Universe installments, so they could still appear onscreen together after almost three decades.
Throughout this week, Gunn will be sharing some behind-the-scenes Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 photos via his official Instagram account. You can check them out below, along with some recently-released international posters for the sequel!
