Avengers: Infinity War is the culmination of three Marvel Cinematic Universe phases. The Russo brothers juggled all of the MCU superheroes and revealed the Mad Titan in all his terrifying glory, so the news that the movie will run more than 150 minutes is no surprise.
Attendees at the D23 Expo and San Diego Comic Con saw the extent of Thanos’ power. With the Infinity Gauntlet, he’s able to destroy planets and throw them at the Avengers! The Russo brothers indicated that the scene isn't even from the third act, so who knows what level of power he might reach?
The movie was originally announced as Infinity War Part 1. That changed, but we believe that the fourth (and presumably final) Avengers flick will also focus on the Mad Titan. He still has to get his hands on the Infinity Stones, which we assume will happen next year.
Director Joe Russo discussed Thanos' quest and motivation for his search for the Infinity Stones during an interview with IGN:
[Thanos] has a more casual approach in this film, and it’s very philosophical for him. It’s part of his character definition. It’s a spiritual journey for him to collect the Stones, and one with which he doesn’t need armor.
Besides explaining why Thanos doesn't require armor, Russo pointed out that he’s seeking something other than power. So we really can’t describe him as a traditional villain (which leads us to speculate that his quest will be revealed in Infinity War and Avengers 4 will end his story). As he acquires the Infinity Stones, the Mad Titan will shed everything that made him recognizable as a Warlord (in this case, his armor).
We are definitely excited about this. And we’re curious about Thanos’ spiritual quest. What do you think?
