A February Twitter discussion between Mark Hamill and James Gunn almost immediately sparked rumors that the Star Wars actor had signed on for a role in Guardians of the Galaxy 3.
During their exchange, Hamill and Gunn arranged to meet for a cup of coffee and chat as both neighbors (they live relatively close to each other) and potential co-workers. Of course, it could have been a simple casual Twitter encounter. But it could have been calculated to spark discussion among fans.
If the latter were the case, it was a success! Fans did discuss, and they were excited about the idea that Hamill might join the MCU. Having Gunn direct would be the icing on the cake.
Collider spoke with Hamill at the 2018 Saturn Awards about his chat with Gunn, from the point of view of both neighbor and unemployed actor. They then asked about a GotG3 role, but Hamill’s answer may not have been what fans wanted to hear:
Earlier, when I had him down for a barbecue, we didn’t talk about the movie. We talked about living in Malibu, our relatives, pets, and it never really came up. But that’s the way it should be, I don’t want to strong arm him in any way. I love the movies; they’re fun, but I’m happy to be in the audience. There’s a lot less pressure.
This answer may be a bit disappointing, but, given the secrecy around all Marvel projects, wasn’t this the only answer Hamill could have given? So what do you think? Do you believe they really just chatted about the neighborhood? Or could there be more to it?
